MEET THE 'GENRE MIXOLOGIST': AN INTERVIEW WITH BOBBY NASH

Meet “Genre Mixologist” Bobby Nash at Medium. Big thanks to author Nick Ahlhelm at Medium for the fun interview.

By the way, "Genre Mixologist" is totally going on the next batch of business cards.

Meet the “Genre Mixologist”: an interview with Bobby Nash

Bobby Nash is a creator whose name I know all the way back from the early days of my own writing career. He’s a fascinating genre-bender in his work, writing mysteries, crime novels, science fiction and of course, super powered fiction. This makes him the perfect subject for my second creator interview.

MOM'S BIRTHDAY...

Mom's birthday is today. It's the first to roll around since she died 5 months ago and it's still hard to believe she's gone. It's been an emotional day for my Dad, brother, and I, as you can imagine. After much haranguing, her placard is finally installed so we were finally able to place flowers on the mausoleum door for the first time.

My family is not big on celebrating birthdays. Never really have been except for a couple of parties when I was a little kid. Usually, a birthday here means a card and dinner out. Today, this one involved a lot of crying, arguing, and feeling like crap (damn sinuses).

Writing related posts will resume tomorrow.

THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF BANNER CREATION!

Trial and error...
I created a new banner for my Patreon 2.0 Initiative. It is surprisingly difficult to get the banner just right and when I get it to fit, it's a little low rez. Might be time to invest in some new art software, I think.

Thanks again to all of my patrons. I appreciate the support. Look for some patron exclusive content and an ebook release coming soon.

YET ANOTHER TOP 5 LIST... WANNA PLAY ALONG?

I borrowed this one from my friend, author Jim Beard over on Facebook: Pondering my most-favorite TV series of all time and I sort of automatically came up with personal criteria for inclusion:

*No longer on the air, seen every episode, could watch any episode at any time, love them even for their faults*

So, using Jim's criteria, in no particular order, my Top Five TV Series of All Time (at least as of today):

M*A*S*H, Night Court, Magnum p.i., Star Trek, and Stargate (those last two I'll just lump all the series together though DS9 and Atlantis are my favorites of each). These are shows that, if I run across them, I will watch.

Honorable mention (since others are doing it) go to Leverage, Deadwood, The Newsroom, Justified, Longmire, Doctor Who,
Nash Bridges, Babylon 5, and Married... With Children. I can watch these shows (and have) over and over again.

What is your top 5? I'd love to hear from you in the comments below.

WINTER IS HERE!

This is my spot.
Tonight, I sat upon the iron throne and finished binge watching 7 seasons of Game of Thrones. It was amazing. Now, where's that final season? Wait. What? I have to wait how long? Grrrrr....

An absolutely fantastic series. I'm glad I was able to watch it. I am amazed at what they have accomplished with this series. It is incredibly well written and complex, juggling a large cast seemingly with ease. I have not read the novels, but now I am curious to give them a try.

FEELING A BIT ARTSY...

I worked on a commission piece tonight featuring my favorite pulp adventuress, The Domino Lady. I'm not always thrilled with how I draw female character faces so I've been practicing. This one came out pretty good, I think. DL plays a mean game of dominoes. I left the commissioners name off.

And you know I can't send out a package without doodling on the envelope. The lady at the post office gets a kick out of them. The Flash is here to remind the Post Office to please do not send this envelope.

What do you think?

I love doing commissions. I don't get to do them as often as I'd like, but they're fun. If you're interested in one of your own, hit me up and we'll make it happen. Rates are pretty cheap, comparatively.

ALWAYS STRETCH BEFORE WRITING...

I stretched both the writing and leg muscles today. Added some words to the novel and walked a mile outside. The trick is making sure I do that every day. #amwriting

Hint: I can't afford modern art.

AN ALTERNATE LOOK...

Alternate un-used cover by Jamie Chase
Jamie Chase shared this alternate cover for the graphic novel of our graphic novel adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' At the Earth's Core we did for Sequential Pulp Comics and Dark Horse Comics on his Facebook page so I thought I would share it here. It's a beautiful cover. You can still find copies here and there.

This was a fun book. It was a real treat stepping into Edgar Rice Burroughs' playground, even for a short time. Though dated in some places, it is a great novel and I enjoyed re-reading it to prepare for this book. A fun project.

LIFE IN THE FASTER LANE COLLECTIONS - COMING 2018 FROM BEN BOOKS!

BIG NEWS! R.O. and the gang are back!

BEN Books is planning a collection of Life In The Faster Lane strips in book form to release in 2018. Writer/Artist Bobby Nash said, "I am excited to get R.O. back into print for a new generation of kids to enjoy." When asked if this collection could lead to new Life In The Faster Lane strips being created, Nash smiled and said, "Anything's possible."

Life In The Faster Lane strips can currently be found at https://fasterlane.blogspot.com.
The comic strip originally ran from 1992 - 2004 in Keeping Up With Kids magazine.

Keep watching this space for more news as it becomes available.

FEELING ARTSY...

Doing a little art yesterday. My first time (that I recall) drawing Hellboy. Mike Mignola's design work makes it look deceptively easy. Trust me, it is not. Click for a larger view.

Yesterday's Sketchapalooza continued with a visit by an old friend. It's been a long time since I drew R.O. and he won't let me forget it. R.O. and the Life In The Faster Lane cast were patterned after my family. R.O. is definitely my dad. You can see some of the old strips at http://fasterlane.blogspot.com (has not been updated in a long time. I'm planning a collection of Faster Lane strips this year. Adding some color to them. Fun trip down memory lane.

I packed up two packages of Bobby's Big Box O' Books yesterday and included a couple of box doodles before they go in the mail. Those are always fun to do.

IT'S NOT OFTEN I GO CRAZY OVER TOYS, BUT...

Justice League Assemble!

I looked all over for these Funko HeroWorld vinyl Target exclusives last week after I found the Joker/Luthor pack on a discount rack. I thought I had lost out on them after visiting 4 different Targets. I don't usually go GA-GA over figures, but these are great. Saw them and had to have them. Now I do. They are so cool.
They also had some Scooby Doo ones that looked great, but my money only stretches so far. :)

TRYING TO SELL SNOW IN A BLIZZARD!

Yep. That says it all. Trying to sell snow in a blizzard sounds exactly like book promotion. It's not easy, that's a fact.

Today, I'm trying to write and not being overly successful. I'm also trying to come up with some new ways to promote the Snow books so I can get them in front of more readers. Sales need a good spike so we can continue beyond the initial 6 books. Busy, busy. #amwriting

A SNOW TRAPPED SNEAK PEEK!

Click for larger view.
Not final cover.
It's sneaky peeky time, boys and girls. Here's a snap of the opening few lines from the first draft of SNOW TRAPPED, the upcoming 4th digest thriller by Bobby Nash featuring fan-favorite character, Abraham Snow. Published by BEN Books.

Look for it March 2018.

Learn more about SNOW here and here.
Here's a better look at the copy that is pasted above:

###

The plan was simple.

They had rehearsed it back and forth, side to side, and twelve ways from Sunday. There was nothing that would get in the way of the crew’s objective. They had planned for every detail.

Tommy Reardon was the brains of the operation. It was he that first put the crew together eight years earlier when they took down a hidden vault in South Florida where a cabal of wealthy businessmen hid their dirty money from their less than legitimate endeavors. The take had set up each man on the team for life. They were all filthy rich and had gotten away without incident.

After all, what were their victims going to do, call the police and report that their ill-gotten gains had been stolen.

Of course not.

###

This is all first draft, of course. It could, and probably will, change somewhat.

As I have mentioned before, SNOW is my tribute to the action detective/p.i. stories I grew up with. This one leaps into action movie territory with a story that is clearly int he same vein as Die Hard. That's right. We're fighting bad guys in a building. Heh. I was so tempted to plant tongue firmly in cheek and call this one SNOW HARD, but I suspected there were many a jokester out there that would think it meant something else so we'll save that title for the porn parody. Ha!

HOLLIS P.I.'S LATEST CASE IS NOW ON AUDIO!

Hollis p.i. explodes onto audio!

Hard-boiled crime thrilling action at its best is now available as an audiobook at Amazon and
Audible.

Gary Phillips' Nate Hollis leaps from the comics to his first complete prose collection and now onto AUDIO for the first time! Authors Juliet Blackwell, Bobby Nash, Aaron Philip Clark, and Derrick Ferguson join Phillips to create six double barreled tales of mystery and action. The streets are mean, but they don't hold a stick of dynamite to Hollis, P.I. From creator Gary Phillips and Pro Se Productions. The audio book is read by Ferdie Luthy. Produced by Radio Archives.

"P.I. Nate Hollis originally sprang from the rich imagination of LA-based writer Gary Phillips, but he's so real and tactile he could climb off the page and buy you a bourbon. Now, four other authors are getting a piece of Nate, too, and this latest collection of Nate stories is wonderful. This is contemporary noir at its best, offering all the familiar pleasures of the genre, but giving them a modern makeover. Yes, this is a violent world that Nate inhabits, but he steers a true and moral course through the layers of deception, skullduggery, and sometimes worse that make these stories such high-density entertainment. Nate's a great character and these stories do him justice and more."
- T. Jefferson Parker, Author of The Famous and the Dead

Bobby's story in this collection is called"Naomi." Hollis has been hired by the parents of a missing young woman who came to Hollywood to become an actress, Hollis finds her, but it's too late. The hard life she fell into chewed her up and spit her out onto the hard, cracked asphalt streets of Angeltown. He might not be able to save her, but there is one thing Hollis can do, he can find Naomi's killers and make them pay for the life they took.

Learn more about Hollis P.I. below.

SPOTTED IN THE WILD-- EVIL WAYS AND AT THE EARTH'S CORE!

Spotted in the wild while I was at 2nd and Charles in Athens, GA earlier today.

Seeing 2 copies of Evil Ways was a surprise. I don't think I've ever seen one in a bookstore, especially these early editions from my first, crappy publisher. These are rare books, indeed. I have a few in a box somewhere. That's probably it. Not signed so they we're not bought from me at a con. Each copy was $6.95. A great deal. The updated BEN Books' version is still widely available.

ERB's At The Earth's Core graphic novel by moi and Jamie Chase is almost out of print and discounted at stores for 1/2 price, only $7.50. There was 1 copy left at this location.

Seeing these made my day. Now, all I need is someone to go and buy them. Heh.

SPOTTED IN THE WILD-- SANDERSON OF METRO IN AUSTRALIA LIBRARY!

WE LOVE LISTENER REVIEWS-- BOX 13 EDITION!

We love reader (and listener) reviews!

Big Thanks to Mike Porter for leaving a 5 star review for Radio Archives' Box 13 audio at Audible. Many thanks, Mike. It is appreciated.

Mike wrote:
"Excellent stories! If you're an OTR fan and am familiar with the late 1940's weekly radio version of Box 13, you'll enjoy Dan's new adventures. The authors have captured the spirit of the old shows, especially the very first one. A couple of the new adventures have a X Files feel to them, but they are fun. All the stories are set in the late 40's and early 50's and the topical references are historically accurate. And the reader is excellent."

I'm especially excited for Box 13 praise. Not only did I write 3 of the stories, but I also produced this edition so it holds a special place in my heart. Features stories by Jim Beard, Barry Reese, Andrew Salmon, and Bobby Nash. Cover by Douglas Klauba. Performed by Nick Santa-Maria.  Based on Box 13 starring Alan Ladd.

BOX THIRTEEN - ADVENTURE WANTED! can be purchased in audio and ebook formats at the following retailers:
Radio Archives direct audio CDs - 6 hours

Radio Archives direct (ebook)

I'm especially excited for Box 13 praise. Not only did I write 3 of the stories, but I also produced this edition so it holds a special place in my heart. Thanks again, Mike.
