What attracted you to comics?

The question was asked on a Facebook group: What attracted you to comics? What was the appeal and what kept you there?

The '66 Spider-man cartoon used to play in reruns after school when I was a kid in the 70's. I was enamored of the character and eventually convinced my mom to buy me some Spider-man comics (a 3 pack with Amazing Spider-man issues 192, 193, and 194 were my first) and I was hooked. I loved the adventure and the escapism. I'm still looking for adventure and escapism. Spider-man was my gateway to comics and I am ever so grateful.

IT'S A MYSTERY!

My new crystal ball has arrived.

Tell me, oh wise crystal ball, will I become a Bestselling Author this year? And don't give me none of that 'future looks murky' malarkey either. :)

Thanks, Fandom Center. I love it.

3 PICTURES...

This was a fun question I was asked on social media.

IN THREE PICTURES: What fictional characters did you spend the most time pretending to be as a kid?

My childhood heroes.

My mom used to love to tell, well, anyone who would listen, how I used to run around the backyard pointing my hands at the sky going "THWIP! THWIP!" and pretending to be Spider-Man. I blame my love of comics, super-heroes, sci-fi, and all things geeky that I am enamored of on Spider-man. It was Spidey (we're buds so I can call him that) in cartoons that was my first introduction to the character. From there, I found comic books. My first comics were Amazing Spider-man issues 192, 193, and 194 that I convinced my mom to buy me in a 3 pack at Zayre's super store way back when.

Colonel Steve Austin was the man. The two coolest things you could be int he 70's was an astronaut or a guy with super powers. Steve Austin was both and he had the coolest sound effects to go with it. I wanted to be a Bionic Kid so bad... until I realized exactly what that entailed. I had fun pretending though. It also got me to run a lot, which meant exercise. I saw Lee Majors at Dragon Con once, but did not get to meet him. Bummer.

Captain James T. Kirk didn't have super powers, but he went to the coolest places and had kick butt adventures. It was a childhood dream to walk the halls of the USS Enterprise as a member of Starfleet. The closest I came was working on the Starship Farragut and Star Trek Continues fan films and visiting their sets. A dream come true. I saw William Shatner at Dragon Con once, but I did not get to meet him. Bummer.

I learned a lot from these characters, including values and morals.

These three characters, not surprisingly, are characters I would love to write officially one day.

IT'S TIME FOR ANOTHER INSTALLMENT OF BOBBY'S BOX ART!

I worked on a couple of commissions for customers who purchased Bobby's Big Box O' Books or ordered autographed copies of books direct from me.

The first commission has Dave Stevens' The Rocketeer ready to take flight. The gun didn't quite come out right.

The second commission featured my buddy, Randy Bishop's The Hawk of New York from his comic book of the same name..

And since I mailed out some packages of books today so you know what that means... it's time for Bobby's Box Art! Of the 4 pieces I sketched today, I think Spider-Man came out the best. Deadpool is okay. The markers we're a bit too dark on Captain America and The Hulk though. Always a concern when drawing against a brown background. #amdrawing #amwriting #BobbysBigBoxOBooks

These are fun. I enjoy drawing them.

R.I.P. STEVE DITKO...

I'm sad to hear of the passing of Steve Ditko, co-creator of Spider-man, Doctor Strange, and so many more amazing characters. Here's the story from the Hollywood Reporter.

I did not know Mr. Ditko personally, but the characters he had a hand in creating have become some of my favorites and have in recent years morphed from the comic page to the big screen with characters like Spider-man and Doctor Strange or Squirrel Girl in the upcoming New Warriors show or Hawk and Dove on the upcoming Titans series.

Rest in Peace, sir.

BOOKS, ART, AND CLEAVAGE! JUST ANOTHER SATURDAY IN WRITER LAND!

Not sure how the Post Office feels about them, but I have a lot of fun doing these "do not bend" sketch reminders on packages I ship. These two, done this morning, features everyone's favorite wall-crawler, Spider-Man and everyone's favorite man with a Bad Attitude, Mr. T as B.A. Barracus of The A-Team.

FYI, if you're interested in one of your very own, I do sell autographed books direct to readers. I also do art commissions. Just hit me up if you're interested.

Also, apparently today is International Cleavage day. Who knew? Have you met Domino Lady?
The above image painted by Uwe Jarling.

My cleavage, I keep hidden. You're welcome.

Happy Saturday!

SUPERHEROES AND SUPERSTARS

Captain Nash: Hero for Hire
I took a road trip to Greenville,SC with my buddy, Mike Gordon today. We visited a couple of cool comic shops and then made a stop at the Superheroes and Superstars: The Works of Alex Ross exhibit at Forman University's Upcountry History Museum. Sadly, photos of the original art was prohibited so here's the sign and me at the photo backdrop and a few odds and ends outside of the exhibit.

The exhibit runs through June 3, 2018.

Love the look of these doors.

I thought I was being Hawkeye until I noticed the Bat-symbol.

While in Greenville, we popped into Borderlands Comics for their annual big sale. Nice crowds on a drizzly Saturday.

It's also always great visiting with Richard's Comics when I'm in Greenville.

It's Clobberin' Time! I picked up some cool stuff today featuring everybody's favorite blue-eyed Thing.

FEELING ARTSY...

Doing a little art yesterday. My first time (that I recall) drawing Hellboy. Mike Mignola's design work makes it look deceptively easy. Trust me, it is not. Click for a larger view.

Yesterday's Sketchapalooza continued with a visit by an old friend. It's been a long time since I drew R.O. and he won't let me forget it. R.O. and the Life In The Faster Lane cast were patterned after my family. R.O. is definitely my dad. You can see some of the old strips at http://fasterlane.blogspot.com (has not been updated in a long time. I'm planning a collection of Faster Lane strips this year. Adding some color to them. Fun trip down memory lane.

I packed up two packages of Bobby's Big Box O' Books yesterday and included a couple of box doodles before they go in the mail. Those are always fun to do.

It's not too late to get your Big Box O' Books. GET YOURS HERE TODAY!

After having so much fun talking Spider-Man last week, Ryan Cadaver and I joined Phantom Troublemaker in the Phantom Zone once again, this time to discuss Spider-Man: Homecoming! You can hear the full podcast review here. I always have fun hanging with these guys. Action is still our
reward!

Phantom Troublemaker, Ryan Cadaver, and the Award-Winning Bobby Nash once again gather in the Phantom Zone, this time to discuss Spider-Man: Homecoming!

The newest entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe is one that for years seemed impossible – a movie starring Peter Parker, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man! Thanks to fan demand and probably more than a little corporate greed, Sony and Disney got on the same page and decided to share Marvel Comics' best-known and most profitable character. Did they pull it off? Is the MCU Spidey the best Spidey? Where does this new film fit in to the grand scheme of Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Listen in as Phantom, Bobby, and Ryan discuss the history of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in comics, TV, and movies on Needless Things podcast episode 169: Spider-Man: Homecoming HERE!

If you like this episode, please check out Needless Things episode 168 where Phantom Troublemaker, Ryan Cadaver, and I talk all things Spider-Man leading up to the new movie.

It's a fun discussion that you can listen to HERE!

Spider-Man has been everywhere and done everything as Marvel Comics' highest profile and most consistently profitable character. SUITING UP FOR CIVIL WAR!

Had a fun time talking Captain America: Civil War with Jay Sherer on The Reclamation Society podcast today. Look for it to go live in a week or so. Learn more about The Reclamation Society below or at their website here.

What is truth? That's the question we ask when we discuss films, television shows, and comic books. We dive deeper into the philosophies, theologies, and values held by the storytellers and conveyed through their characters. Every storyteller communicates his or her version of truth. And, since stories help us interpret and understand our universe, we want to dive deeper into the stories circulating within our culture. We even analyze our own stories! THE WRAP UP-- ATLANTA COMIC CONVENTION 8/14/16!

I was a guest at the Atlanta Comic Convention on August 14th. I've been doing this convention since the beginning, 20 years now and it is still one of my favorites. I always have a good time. This one was a little different thanks to it falling on my birthday, which meant a lot of well-wishes, which were greatly appreciated. Birthdays aren't a big to-do in the Nash family so I'm not used to doing much. I mean, I can count the number of birthday parties I've had on one hand.

I almost cancelled my appearance after taking a spill Saturday night. I was really sore on Sunday so, instead of my usual running around the con, I stayed at my table most of the day and stayed in my seat so there are fewer photos than usual. I know others have posted several shots from the event on social media. I usually stand so I can talk to people easier. I'm glad I went as it was a great day. I even got to draw the winner of the 2 free passes to Dragon Con, which was fun.

In addition to talking with some great folks and seeing friends, I even managed to sell a few books, which is always a nice bonus. Afterward, the evening was capped off with friends at Fellini's where I ate some great pizza.

All in all, an absolutely fun day. If you weren't there, you should have been. The next ACC should be sometime in early December. I will post the new date here when I have it.
