BEN BOOKS ANNOUNCES SNOW SHORTS FOR 2021!

Some news I'm really excited to share.

BEN BOOKS ANNOUNCES SNOW SHORTS FOR 2021

Press Release:
12/30/2020

As 2020 draws to a close, BEN Books and author Bobby Nash are looking ahead to a Snow-filled New Year! The indie publisher and award-winning author of the Snow series are thrilled to announce the debut of SNOW SHORTS in 2021.

SNOW SHORTS are, as the name suggests, short stories set within the Snow universe. BEN Books has reached out to a host of fantastic writers to join Snow creator, Bobby Nash in crafting tales featuring Abraham Snow and his companions. Writers involved include Gary Phillips, Bernadette Johnson, Milton Davis, John Hartness, Beverly Conner, Sean Taylor, Charles F. Millhouse, Brian K. Morris, Mike Gordon, Barry Reese, and more. Covers will be provided by Jeffrey Hayes of PlasmaFire Graphics.

“I am thrilled to have these amazing writers add their unique voices to the Snow series,” says Bobby Nash of the announcement. “Each of these authors bring a new dynamic to the characters and I’m excited to read these stories.”

SNOW SHORTS will be released as $0.99 stand-alone ebooks. When there are three Snow Shorts completed, they will be collected in the same 5”x8” paperback format as the Snow novellas and in collected ebook and audio formats narrated by the voice of Snow, Stuart Gauffi. For those collecting the 6”x9” Snow Series collections, Snow Shorts will be collected in that format after three novella-length collections are released. The 6”x9” format will be available in paperback, hardcover, collected ebook, and collected audio. We understand the desire to keep your collection in a uniform format so BEN Books is working hard to get readers their Snow fix.

The first SNOW SHORT will release in January on ebook for $0.99. SNOW FLIES is written by series creator, Bobby Nash. Barring unforeseen circumstances, a new Snow Short will debut each month.

In addition to SNOW SHORTS, the Snow novella series continues as well when Snow series 1 wraps up in February with SNOW DOWN before Series 2 begins with SNOW HUNT.

To help kick off 2021’s #SeasonsOfSnow BEN Books is making the first book in the series, SNOW FALLS available on ebook at Amazon US and Amazon UK beginning on 12/31/2020 through 01/07/2021. This is a perfect jumping on point to the award-winning Snow series at an incredible price. If you’re a Kindle Unlimited subscriber, SNOW, as well as all BEN Books titles can be read for FREE.

THE DEVIL'S DUE GRABS 5 STARS ON GOODREADS!

Huge thanks to Dennis Crawford for the kind words and 5 STAR GoodReads review of The Devil's Due anthology from Valhalla Books. You can read it HERE.

"This is my first horror anthology book and I love it. I have always loved collections of stories. The authors all manage to draw you into their various stories of otherworldly diabolical figures offering to fulfill your wildest dreams, albeit with malevolent intent. It’s very reminiscent of anthology tv series such as “The Outer Limits” and “The Twilight Zone”. I think that’s what I adored about the book most, the top notch story telling that played in my mind like a movie. I am now hooked on the horror anthology concept and if you give this book a read I believe you will be too. I can’t wait for more works from Valhalla Books and their talented assortment of authors."

The Devil's Due is available at the follow retailers:
Amazon US (paperback)
Amazon UK (paperback)

WE LOVE READER REVIEWS! READING IS FUN. NOT MENTAL. REVIEWS DOMINO LADY "MONEY SHOT"

WE LOVE READER REVIEWS! A huge round of thanks to Todd Latoski (TL) for his kind words about my pulpy political thriller novel, Domino Lady "Money Shot" on his READING IS FUN. NOT MENTAL. blog. You can read the full review HERE.

Here are a couple of small snippets from the review.

"Domino Lady: Money Shot is written by Bobby Nash, with whom I was not really familiar until I met him at DragonCon in Atlanta in 2019. I picked up his Nightveil novel, based on the character by AC Comics, and which was a thoroughly enjoyable book. So, I was curious to see how he would handle a non-powered female character and picked up his Domino Lady novel. It has taken me more than a year, but I finally sat down and read it. And I enjoyed it for two reasons."

"Nash doesn't pull punches when it comes to the fights, the chases, and the deaths. Domino Lady herself faces the grim reaper a couple of times in the story, but she manages to escape its eternal clutches and lives to fight another day. She takes on hit men, evades cops, and even has a vicious fight with a naked assassin (you have to read it to believe it!), but ultimately she uncovers the truth - and it definitely ain't pretty. The story provides a satisfying conclusion, but definitely leaves it open for more stories that, perhaps, one day Nash will tell."

TL also has some kind words for Howard Hopkins' Golden Amazon backup story.
Thanks again, TL.

You can read the full review HERE.

Domino Lady "Money Shot" is available in Kindle, Paperback, and Hardcover.
Published by Moonstone Books.

Domino Lady returns in 2021.

WE LOVE READER REVIEWS! FRONTIER GRABS 4 OUT OF THIS WORLD STARS!

WE LOVE READER REVIEWS! Big thanks to merrywood for his kind words and 4 STAR Amazon review of my story collection, FRONTIER. Read it HERE.

"Space Pulp! This is a fun collection of short stories that are all connected by the fact that they take place in space. They do not all share the same characters or anything, but you get a variety of stories set on spaceships or space stations. It all struck me as either a Star Trek TOS vibe, or an earlier 1950s sci-fi flavor of pulp fiction. Nash successfully hits different tones in each of these stories, and they're all short enough to make the whole thing a nice, breezy read. Highly recommended"

Thanks again, merrywood. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I am long overdue for a return to space.

LOST IN TIME...

Isn't it funny how memory works? I owned this Big Little Book called The Incredible Hulk "Lost in Time" when I was a kid. I hadn't thought about it in years. The memory of it was wiped out. Then, I happened across an ebay auction for it and not only did the memories of the story by Don F. Glut and the art (uncredited, but I'm fairly certain it was by Herbe Trimpe) come flooding back to me, but also where I bought it and how much bargaining and begging it took to get my parents to pony up the 79 cents to buy it at the K-Mart in Doraville, GA. They were not big fans of my reading comics, even though this is technically a novella. The memory is crisp and sharp as if I was standing there in that store again. It's kind of like time travel, in a way, which is funny because the story in this book is about time travel.

I won the ebay auction (thank you, Coliseum of Comics in Orlando) and now this piece of my comic-loving history is once again mine. It cost a little more than 79 cents this time around, but was absolutely worth every penny. Even H.E.R.B.I.E. the Muse approves.

As a writer, I often wonder if my work imprints on readers this same way. It definitely makes me think.

WORTH GETTING UP EARLY TODAY...

I had a nice interview with reporter Andrew Shearer from the Athens Banner-Herald today. I sent out the press release about Snow Falls winning the New Pulp Fiction Award and they were the first to reach out for an interview. We also had fun talking conventions as we were both at the same first con back in 1989. Small world, eh? I'll share the link when it goes live. I love the promotion process.

WHEN CHARACTERS WON'T LEAVE...

In November, I wrote a blog post for my friend, Nicole Givens Kurtz's newsletter (which you should totally sign up for HERE and get a free book) about the return of Sheriff Tom Myers in my new series, In The Wind and how the character evolved and stuck around after his initial appearance in Evil Ways and Deadly Games! years ago. I also explain how it all ties into my Snow series as well.

Sometimes it is a pain when characters won't leave. Then, there are times when it turns out to be the best thing ever. I'd say Tom Myers' constant pestering me to give him his own story falls in the latter category. Lucky for me the character was too stubborn to go away quietly.

Below is the blog post in its entirety and Nicole's intro from her newsletter. Big thanks to her for asking me to write this post.

When Characters Won't Leave
by Bobby Nash

Don’t you just hate it when guests don’t know when to leave?

I’ve had this same issue crop up with characters before and why not, eh? I mean, when I create and write characters, they become real to me. Sometimes too real. Eventually, they stop listening to me until finally, they start telling me what they’re going to do.

As a writer, this is a great thing.

It’s also a pain in the butt.

When my characters become real, they have character traits, foibles, and personalities just like real people. At the best of times, those character traits will elevate the story and gives those characters that added oomph! (that’s a technical term) that helps the reader connect to them. Have you ever fallen in love with a fictional character? I know I have. This is why.

Way back in the previous century, sometime in the late 1990’s, I was writing what would become my first published novel. It was called Evil Ways (Shameless plug #1: you can still find Evil Ways at your favorite on-line retailer). Evil Ways is a mix of thriller, mystery, and horror. I once described the book as “imagine if Die Hard’s John McClane found himself in a horror movie setting.” Sounds fun, right?

Evil Ways stars FBI Agent Harold Palmer and his brother, small-town newspaper reporter/owner Franklin Palmer (Shameless plug #2: Evil Intent is coming in 2021. It is also currently being released as a serialized novel at www.patreon.com/bobbynash). The brothers are on the trail of a killer while reconnected after many years apart.

As a newbie novelist (I had already been published with comic books and short stories), I set about creating a fictional town and county called Sommersville, Georgia (before I realized there was a real Summerville, Georgia. Oops!). The action took place in this fictional county. I needed a local cop to interact with the Palmer brothers and that was the first time I met Sommersville Sheriff Tom Myers and his deputies, Benjamin Dooley and Christopher Jackson. They were important to the story, but were not the main characters. As luck would have it, they all survived the novel, although not unscathed as I had put them through the wringer.

In all honesty, I never planned to write these characters or fictional county again.

What did I know, huh?

My next novel was called Deadly Games! It features new characters - Atlanta PD Detective John Bartlett and photojournalist Benjamin West. Together, these two captured a madman six years earlier. He was convicted and sent to prison. Now, six years later, he enacts his revenge. (Shameless plug #3: you can still find Deadly Games! at your favorite on-line retailer). Part of the story takes place in a rural area.

A lightbulb went off that reminded me of this fictional town I put a lot of time into created. So, being the smart (or lazy) writer that I am, I set part of the action in Sommersville. There was no plan to bring in the sheriff’s department though.

Until the story demanded it.

Tom Myers returned with deputies Dooley and Jackson, which made Deadly Games! a kinda/sorta sequel to Evil Ways. I even made mention to the events as a reminder for the readers.

Since then, the character of Tom Myers has kept tapping on the back of my brain, reminding me that he’s ready to return whenever I need him. He will make a small appearance in 2021’s Evil Intent, by the way.

When I was looking for a companion piece to my Snow series (Shameless plug #4: all of the Snow books are still on sale and more are on the way. Visit www.abrahamsnow.com for more). Snow grew up in Sommersville County, which is something I originally threw in as an easter egg for longtime readers, but it was all part of Tom Myers’ plan to make a big comeback.

I shouldn’t have been surprised when a story idea hit me that would be perfect for Myers and his team. That’s when In The Wind – A Tom Myers Mystery was born. Not only had this character refused to go away, he is now headlining his own series and has solidified the Sommersville Saga and the BEN Books Thriller Universe.

Not bad for a one-off character, huh?

The lesson here is to never assume that anything is one and done when it comes to writing. Your characters might just surprise you and demand more time in the spotlight. Tom Myers certainly did. As a matter of fact, he’s not the only character to do that. Remind me to tell you about Lance Star one of these days (Shameless plug #5: all of the Lance Star: Sky Ranger books are still on sale at your favorite retailer. Visit http://lancestar.blogspot.com for more).

In The Wind is the first book in the Tom Myers Mystery series published by BEN Books (www.ben-books.com). It is available in paperback, ebook, and audio book. Read it FREE with your Kindle Unlimited subscription. Look for book 2 in early 2021.

Happy reading.

LOCAL AUTHOR BOBBY NASH WINS NEW PULP FICTION AWARD!

Georgia author Bobby Nash has been awarded the New Pulp Fiction Award by the Sangria Summit Society for his literary work, specifically SNOW FALLS, the first book in his Snow series of novellas published by BEN Books.

PRESS RELEASE:
December 1, 2020

The Sangria Summit Society is pleased to announce that Bobby Nash has won the $500 New Pulp Fiction Award for his book, Snow Falls.

The author must be living at the time of the award. The awards will be paid using PayPal. They are taxable. It is our hope that these awards will further our goal to create a larger audience for authors within the military community.

“I am equal parts shocked, thrilled, and humbled to learn that I have been awarded the New Pulp Fiction Award by the Sangria Summit Society,” said Nash shortly after the announcement. “In what is sure to be a surprise to anyone who knows me, I'm at a bit of a loss as I try to find correct words to convey how it feels to be recognized by your peers, fans, and friends for your work, in this case, Snow Falls. The only thing I can think to say is THANK YOU. I'm honored.”

SNOW FALLS AND AUTHOR BOBBY NASH WINS NEW PULP FICTION AWARD!

I am equal parts shocked, thrilled, and humbled to learn that I have been awarded the New Pulp Fiction Award by the Sangria Summit Society for my novella SNOW FALLS. In what is sure to be a surprise to anyone who knows me, I'm at a bit of a loss for words. I have written and rewritten this post several times as I try the correct words to convey how it feels to be recognized by your peers, fans, and friends for your work. I am happy to hear that readers are enjoying my work, in this case, SNOW FALLS in particular. The only thing I can think to say is THANK YOU. I'm honored.

Repost New Pulp Fiction Award:
The Sangria Summit Society is pleased to announce that Bobby Nash has won the $500 New Pulp Fiction Award for his book, Snow Falls.

The Sangria Summit Society will offer an annual New Pulp Fiction award with a cash value of $500. Our committee will consider pulp fiction books published in English, in this century, by a sole author. The author must be living at the time of the award. The awards will be paid using PayPal. They are taxable. It is our hope that these awards will further our goal to create a larger audience for authors within the military community.

WE LOVE READER REVIEWS! PULP FICTION REVIEWS GIVES 5 STARS TO PULP REALITY #1!

WE LOVE READER REVIEWS! Big thanks to Ron Fortier for his kind words as Pulp Fiction Reviews checks out PULP REALITY # 1 and gives it 5 STARS! You can read the full review HERE and HERE.

"Wonderful New Pulp Collection. Kudos to writer/editor Charles F. Millhouse for creating as yet another pseudo/magazine devoted to New Pulp fiction. Note, PULP REALITY isn’t the first such as over the past decade or so various other outfits have tried their hands at bringing back that old style of storytelling. As with all such endeavors, this volume has its ups and downs, hits and misses. Let’s look at the good stuff first. This premier issue features seven fun stories, the majority of them well written. In fact a few are outright pulp gems.

“Showdown on Scavenger Quay” by Bobby Nash. Lance Star and Captain Hawklin to team up to battle on foes. We’ve always enjoyed stories bringing together heroes and Bobby Nash is one of the most well established, capable writers in New Pulp today as this tale clearly demonstrates.

“Reel One for the B-Man” by Clyde Hall. An old movie house is haunted by all but forgotten matinee cliffhanger heroes. The mere concept here is wonderful and any lover of classic cinema will be smiling broadly as the young hero finds himself morphing into well known heroes to bamboozle a group of biker thug thieves.

“Captain Hawklin and the Clockwork Buccaneer” by Brian K. Morris. A German operative steals American freighters enroute to England during Lend Lease. Though a decent story, we had the feeling the writer simply overcooked his stew with too many elements and it might have benefited with a touch more cutting.

“Testament of a Forgotten God” by Charles F. Millhouse. Captain Zane Carrington transports an aged professor to the middle of the Pacific Ocean for an appointment with Poseidon. Easily the best yarn in the book and masterfully told. Though the ending was no surprise, it was the one we hoped for. We really need to read more of his work. Going to recommend this one for the Pulp Factory Awards.

“Ace Anderson and the Curse of Doctor Atomika Part One” by Pete Lutz. Undersea adventure Ace Anderson and Huck Finn battle German agents attempting to gain the secret weapons of Atlantis. Fast paced and often times confusing, we could barely follow along as the narrative was so intent on action it left little room for characterization. Pulp is action and adventure, but we also need to believe the characters are real.

“Prepare to be Mr. Fye” by Pete Lutz. Detective Jinx Duncan has a special occult power bestowed upon him; that that might come in handy when going after criminals in the big city. This is another of those gems we mentioned earlier and as an original tale, it is delivered smoothly making us want to see what comes next.

“Mercury Rises” by Rick Bradley. Clock repairman and part time P.I. Jack Mercury is kidnapped into outer space and becomes the hero of his own fantastic adventure. Finally the entire collection ends on a grand note that clearly demands lots more. Bradley knows how to write and this one was fun. To repeat, a terrific way to lower the curtain on a spectacular first issue.

Okay, so now a personal critique. Whatever the publisher’s intent, the oversized format really doesn’t work. It is an awkward shape difficult to hold, even when reclining in one’s comfortable recliner. The average reader would appreciate its size made to conform to the actual classic pulp mags.

There you have it. PULP REALITY is fresh and exciting and off to a grand start. Here’s hoping it is around for a long time to come."
