SOMETIMES IT PAYS TO FOLLOW YOUR GUT!

I saw this meme on-line and thought it was too good not to share. It's actually great writing advice.

I have had some remarkable stories spin out of starting a story this way. Follow your character down a blind alley or into a mall and see where it takes you. Remember, there is no right or wrong way to tell your story. Tell it your way, especially the first draft. You can always tweak in edits and later drafts.

Use your first draft to get the story down. They you can edit and revise to your heart's content until you are happy with the finished piece... or you hit your deadline, whichever comes first. Ha!

An example: this is from a novel that is not finished yet called Blood Shot (although, that could always change between now and publication).

I needed a break from my two main characters, who we have been following for several chapters. I felt this was a great place to switch to another character, but everyone already introduced was tied up. I was stuck for what to do, but I knew there was a thief we would see later, a bit character, but important. I thought this might be a good time to introduce her.

I started writing the chapter focusing on a man, a new character who was spinning out in the writing with no real planning. I wrote a whole chapter with him, introduced the thief, showed her steal his access card, all bits that needed to happen, but I still didn't know how this guy fit the story. He felt too important a detail to simply be the way in for the thief. I liked the chapter, but didn't know if it fit. I set it aside and went back to the story points focusing on the leads.

Two chapters later, I knew not only how the guy fit in with the story, but his presence became integral to the plot and to one of the main characters. It all worked as though I had planned it out.

Sometimes it pays to follow your gut.

THE COUNTDOWN TO HALLOWEEN VISITS THE HOUSE OF HORRORS!

Instead of watching horror movies as a lead up to Halloween, I like to watch Halloween themed TV episodes.

The Countdown To Halloween continues with FX: The Series' "House of Horrors" episode. A lot of homage to old horror flicks in this murder mystery episode from season 2. Fun stuff from a fun 90's show based on the FX movies. Special Effects Guru, Rollie Tyler, played by Cameron Daddo, finds himself mixed up in crime solving cases often, helping out the NYPD, the FBI, and old friends in trouble. Also starring Cristina Cox, Kevin Dobson, and a pre-Matrix Carrie-Anne Moss.

FX: The Series was a little bit movie magic and a little bit MacGyver, but it was fun TV.

I wasn't able to do as many Countdown To Halloween posts as I had originally hoped as life, work, and family got in the way, you know. I hope you've enjoyed the Halloween posts. I've had fun re-watching these shows.

THE WRAP UP-- HOOVER, ALABAMA LIBRARY'S SCI-FI/FANTASY FEST!

The 2nd Annual Sci-Fi and Fantasy Festival was, as advertised, a 3-day event with 3 times the geeky, nerdy fun as last year's event. This year the Hoover Library partnered with my friends from the Alabama Phoenix Festival and Kingdom Comics to bring Alabama a Festival weekend they wont soon forget. I know I won't.

Big thanks once again to all involved with the event for taking such good care of us. It was a fun weekend and I had a blast. Highlights for me include Friday night's Whose Line Is It Anyway? which was totally improved as the person running it was unable to attend. We might right playful fools of ourselves, but the audience had a good laugh so it was totally worth it. Saturday night's Match Game was amazing. Probably the biggest thrill of my weekend, The final panel of the weekend had Van Allen Plexico and I discussing crime noir and science fiction and how the two meet was enlightening and fun. Van and I have also decided that we
need to record a White Rocket Podcast episode soon talking about Harry Bosch in books and TV. Should be a lot of fun. Artist Alley included several friends including Van, my Operation: Silver Moon partner in crime, Rick Johnson, Lysa Shin, David Wright, Ali Duke, Patrick Giles, and more. Please forgive me if I forgot anyone. I also met a few authors and artists for the first time as well as some friends from the Birmingham area who stopped by to say hello.

As I understand it, there are plans to do it again next year. If you get the chance to attend, I highly recommend it. Or, if you just happen to be in the Birmingham/Hoover are, stop by the incredible Hoover Library. I wish we had one like it here.

Thanks again.

TODAY'S OFFICE...

My outdoor writing office.
The view.
Another afternoon writing on the porch. Instead of another "my office view" I thought I'd flip it and show you the outdoor writing space. It's kind of comfy, actually. Because I live in Georgia, there's still the humidity factor so I also bring a fan with me to keep cool while writing.

Today, I am back at work on The Avenger novel I'm working on for Moonstone Books. This one has taken a little longer than I (and the publisher) had originally hoped, but progress is being made. Speaking of which, I'd better get back to it.

THE COUNTDOWN TO HALLOWEEN CONTINUES-- IT'S TRICK OR TREATMENT AT M*A*S*H 4077

The Countdown To Halloween continues!

Instead of watching horror movies as a lead up to Halloween, I like to watch Halloween themed TV episodes. I haven't been able to devote as much time to this as I'd hoped this Halloween season, but I was able to get back into the swing of it with thM*A*S*H episode, "Trick Or Treatment."

The camp's Halloween party is interrupted by wounded, a dead soldier, rowdy Marines, and more. The docs tell spooky stories while operating.

THE COUNTDOWN TO HALLOWEEN CONTINUES-- MACGYVER'S HALLOWEEN KNIGHTS!

The Countdown To Halloween continues!

Instead of watching horror movies as a lead up to Halloween, I like to watch Halloween themed TV episodes. I haven't been able to devote as much time to this as I'd hoped this Halloween season, but I was able to get back into the swing of it with the "Halloween Knights" episode of MacGyver (the 80's version, not the new show).

Mac teams up with arch-nemesis, Murdoc to save the assassin's sister and stop H.I.T. (Homicide International Trust), a league of hired killers at a costume party on Halloween.

You can catch the episode on CBS streaming here.

TODAY'S OFFICE...

Today's office. I'm back outside for another day in the fresh, allergen-filled air. It's a little humid outside and I'm a bit sweaty, but going to work out here with the laptop as long as I can stand it. I started a new medication from my Doctor and it has given me a headache, but I'm suffering through it to get some writing done.

Here are few fun posts I shared to social media this morning about writing--

Writing can be emotionally and physically draining at times, but I can't imagine doing anything else.
And always remember... The first rule of Write Club is... Don't talk. Write.

I love looking through social media and seeing all of the amazing things my creative friends are doing. I am blessed to have such outstanding talent all around me. You all rock and I don't tell you often enough how much you all inspire me. Keep up the good work.

Always remember that tomorrow is another day. Who knows what cool adventure waits for us there?

Happy Sunday.

TODAY'S OFFICE...

My office today.
It's not very sunny out on this October Saturday in Georgia and there's a hint of rain in the air, but the temperature is just right so my trusty laptop and I are once again outside for some hopefully productive writing time.

I love writing outside. Not only is it a nice change of scenery, but it never hurts to get some fresh air. Plus, I seem to get interrupted less when I go outside to write. That's always a nice bonus.

I hope you're having a great weekend.

WE LOVE READER REVIEWS! EVEN WHEN THEY DON'T LOVE US!

We love reader reviews! A big tip of the Pellucidar cap to Juan C. Depaz for taking time to post his thoughts about Edgar Rice Burroughs' At the Earth's Core graphic novel by Bobby Nash and Jamie Chase on Amazon. Published by Sequential Pulp Comics and Dark Horse Comics.

Sadly, the book did not wow Mr. Depaz and I'm sorry he didn't enjoy it. I am thankful, however, that he took the time to write a review on Amazon and gave the book 2 stars. We appreciate each and every review, even those that don't praise the book.

You can read the full review here.

SUNDAY THOUGHTS...

I probably don't say this enough, but I love being a writer. I love telling stories. I love building worlds and getting to know characters and then putting them through hell. I love it when someone tells me they've read something of mine. I love it even more when they say they enjoyed what they read. I feel very fortunate to be able to do what I do. Do I wish I was making a living as a writer? You bet. That's definitely one of the goals I'm working toward. There's a lot of hard work ahead so I better get to it.

Apologies for the sappy post. I'm feeling unusually reflective today.
