PLANNING FOR SNOW SERIES 2 IS UNDERWAY! #THESUMMEROFSNOW

Art by Jeff Austin.
Here's a #TheSummerOfSnow tease.

Playing with some cover text/art for an upcoming Snow series 2 story. This is one of the earliest Snow plots I developed after I created the series. In fact, the 'Hunt' part predates Snow. Hmmm... I know, I know, I still have 2 books left in series 1. Don't worry. I'm working on them too.

A little behind the scenes info. Before there was an Abraham Snow, there was Abraham Hunt and the plan was to call this book Hunt's Bounty, Hunt's Revenge, Hunt's... well, you get the idea. Now, Hunt and Snow are not the same character, in fact, they are quite dissimilar. I started Hunt's Bounty, but later set it aside. I took a few of the ideas, not to mention the first name of the protagonist from the original story and used them in the creation of Abraham Snow. In series 2, coming 2020 most likely, I have plans to have the two characters meet in a story I'm calling Snow Hunt and maybe Snow Bounty if it's a two-parter, which is what I'm thinking at the moment. All of that is subject to change, of course.

More Snow Hunt details to follow. Look for it in Snow Series 2.

BIG BANG UNIVERSE #1 NOW IN PREVIEWS!

Big Bang universe #1 is now in Previews. This new 1st issue features a story by me and Jeff Austin. Check it out at here and let your comic shop know about it.

Staff Picks (February): Big Bang Universe #1
AC Comics have always been a mix of homage to the classic heroes and heroines of yesterday with a bit of updating for today. The folks behind AC Comics are respectful to their characters, and now they're helping to reintroduce Big Bang Comics, complete with its own universe of characters that are very much an homage to the classic heroes of the Golden, Silver, and Bronze Ages.

Back in the 90s, creators Gary Carlson and Chris Ecker initially offered Big Bang Comics through Caliber Comics and then through Image Comics, putting a spin on the heroes we grew up with keeping them safe from the dark and gritty world other publishers assumed their readers wanted.

In Big Bang Universe #1, we are reintroduced to the Knight Watchman in the 48-page story “Skeletons in the Closet” with a 70s feel written by Carlson with art by Kerry Talbott. There is also a very 60s-feeling Knight Watchman story by writer Bobby Nash and artist Jeff Austin, a long time contributor to the AC Comics/Femforce universe as well. A solo Galahad story, featuring the introduction of a new Galahad, helps round out this 80-page collection of unpublished stories with two covers a traditional Knight Watchman cover and a digitally painted Galahad/Lady-in-Waiting cover only available through Diamond.
Having been a fan of the Big Bang Comics from their inception (as they offered a counter-balance to the dark and gritty heroes of the mid to late 1980s) I’m hoping this is just the start of their return. Sometimes you just need heroes that are heroes and storylines that don’t require going into debt to keep up. Sometimes straightforward is better—and when done right, it's done best. Just don’t miss Big Bang Universe #1 under AC Comics in this issue.

AN EVENT 15 YEARS IN THE MAKING!

Cover Art: Kerry Talbott
15 years ago, artist Jeff Austin and I worked up a Knight Watchman tale for Big Bang Comics. Sadly, the story was rejected. These things happen. Finally, after a brief hiatus, Big Bang Comics returns with an all-new issue from powerhouse publisher, AC Comics and they’ve included mine and Jeff’s Knight Watchman story. As you can imagine, Jeff and I are both thrilled and surprised that this story will make it into the hands of readers. Look for it April 2015.

Just another one of the many reasons I love my job.

Bobby

Burk, featuring  SHUTTERBUG and a Retro-60’s KW adventure by Bobby Nash and Jeff Austin !!

Anybody (and everybody) who was collecting comics back in the 1990’s remember Big Bang Comics, right?  You probably last saw them appearing in titles from Image, as a line of classically-inspired superheroes (and heroines) lovingly echoing the comic book approaches of the 1940’s, ’50’s, ’60’s and beyond. Sound familiar? Yeah, in a lot of ways, Big Bang shared the same kind of sensibilities that make AC Comics unique in today’s market- but THEY did it in their own, distinctive way; featuring characters like The KNIGHT WATCHMAN, THUNDER GIRL, The ATOMIC SUB, The BLITZ, and dozens more. Big Bang  is the brainchild of Gary Carlson and Chris Ecker, two comic book creative fanatics who have themselves decades of experience in the field, great storytellers both. The “AC Comics family” goes ‘way back with the Big Bang crew. Mark Heike met Chris  back in 1978 doing fanzines, Stephanie Heike got up with  Gary (back in the days when she was still Stephanie Sanderson) in the 1990’s when she penciled a number of stories for Big Bang Comics , and Mark got to know Gary himself in the late 1990’s when Mr. Carlson was writing the TMNT book for Image, and Heike was inking it as a freelance gig. Well, Gary and Chris had a pretty good run with Big Bang; first at Caliber Comics, and some years at Image, until finally Big Bang got lost in the shuffle a few years ago- gone, but NOT forgotten.

AC has gotten back into contact with Gary and Chris with a plan to bring back Big Bang through AC in 2015, and in April it all starts with Big Bang Universe #1- 80 pages of unpublished, never-before-seen adventures starring that BB fan- favorite The KNIGHT WATCHMAN in a 48-page mini-graphic novel titled “Skeletons In The Closet”, written by Gary Carlson himself, with art by Kerry Talbott in a tour-du-force pitting the ‘WATCHMAN against Hal Owen in a story (and style) startlingly contemporary in tone.

The ‘WATCHMAN’s partner in crimefighting will be in evidence too, as GALAHAD crosses paths with SHUTTERBUG in a solo story titled “Lady In Waiting”, by Gary Carlson and C. B. Burk  that introduces a NEW GALAHAD !!

Then, the female member of the KNIGHT WATCHMAN cast, WATCH GIRL gets center stage in Knight Watchman Adventures, written by Bobby Nash with art by Jeff Austin. That alone may get AC regular fans excited, since Jeff Austin has been a regular illustrator on FEMFORCE for something like about TWELVE YEARS now!! It just so happens that Jeff had ALSO been an artist in the Big Bang stable.

And that is just the beginning, with more to come not only this issue, but in future issues if #1 gets a good response. So all of you old-time Big Bang fans out there, get out and preorder your copy of BIG BANG UNIVERSE #1, and you can be sure there will be more to come. Keep in mind that  this’ll be a whole SEPARATE  world of characters- not in any way related to AC, but likely JUST the sort of thing our regular readers will like. This is NOT a “crossover” of any kind; we won’t be running AC characters in this book, nor will BB characters pop up in FEMFORCE. Since WE in the AC editorial offices are big fans of the BBU, this will be Big Bang Comics 100% directed and driven by Gary and Chris, just as it always was.  We here at AC wouldn’t have it any other way. If you liked what they did before, you should love this, too!  DON’T be intimidated if you’re not familiar with Big Bang or any of their characters- you don’t NEED to be to get in on the fun!  Anyone who  likes rousing good superhero action/adventure stories well-told will enjoy this stuff! Look for Big Bang Universe #1 , 80 pages of all-new  black and white superhero action at standard comic book size, with full-color covers, saddle-stitched- for $9.95,  coming from AC Comics in April 2015. To celebrate the special event that IS the return of BIG BANG to the comic shop shelves, this very exciting premiere issue ships with TWO different cover options- a “standard” KNIGHT WATCHMAN cover version by Kerry Talbott, and a special digitally-painted GALAHAD-LADY IN WAITING design by C. B. Burk.

If you want to be certain of getting the LADY IN WAITING painted cover variant, be sure that your local retailer orders enough copies of this issue- and keep in mind that ordering through Diamond is the ONLY way to receive this variant. If you want to catch up on all things Big Bang before then, be sure to check out their website at www.bigbangcomics.com.

ALL-STAR PULP COMICS #1 REVIEWED

Reader David Brzeski reviewed Red Bud Studios' Airship 27 Presents: All-Star Pulp Comics #1 for the British Fantasy Society website. The reviewer said some nice things about my Secret Agent X story as well, which is always nice to hear.

Bobby Nash is an award-winning ‘New Pulp’ author, and it shows. In his untitled ‘Secret Agent “X”’ story, he, and artist Jeremy McHugh, manage to convey to the reader everything you need to know about the character without resorting to exposition. This was a close second favourite for me.

WHAT LURKS BEYOND THE FRONTIER?

January is almost halfway over? How did that happen so fast?

I put the finishing touches on Frontier today. That means the book should be available in paperback and ebook formats within a few days, but I wanted to share some details early, hopefully to whet your whistle for the BEN Books release.

About Frontier:
Frontier collects 9 sci fi short stories from Bobby Nash, author of Earthstrike Agenda, Evil Ways, and Deadly Games! Some of the rare tales presented in Frontier are reprints and others are in print there for the first time. The stories that make up Frontier happen on Earth, on alien planets, and in the deepest recesses of space. There’s action, adventure, horror, and even a little romance.

Stories included in Frontier:

SAMARITAN
In deepest space, a research vessel rescues a survivor who asks to be returned home. The catch: her planet lies at the center of a black hole. [Note: Samaritan is also available as a stand-alone ebook novella]

DREAMWEAVER
Nathanial “Doc” Dresden wakes up in space, free floating above the moon. But he is not alone. The first prose story featuring Doc Dresden: The Immortal.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE MONSTERS GONE?
Doc Dresden: The Immortal returns. Nathanial “Doc” Dresden and his team investigate bizarre happenings.

MIDWAY
A meteor storm damages Midway Station, a free-floating museum storage facility and frees an ancient creature from its icy tomb to terrorize the repair crew on board to make repairs.

JUST ANOTHER SATURDAY ON OUTPOST 9When war breaks out between neighboring worlds, the Outpost 9 space station is caught in the crossfire. Dr. Erin Moonshadow tries to save lives as chaos reigns around her.

THE DROP
War. Ground troops are dispatched. Dropped from their starship, the troop transport is attacked and one of the soldiers is lost. Then things get strange.

NIGHTMARE IN AMBER
Are a young man’s dreams of an interstellar war a product of his imagination or a prophecy of things to come?

THE GARDEN
A survey crew discovers a veritable Garden of Eden at the far edge of the galaxy. Is this paradise? Or is there a serpent in hiding in this garden, waiting to strike? The Garden is a comic book story by Bobby Nash with art by Jeff Austin and Rusty Gilligan.

A JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY
This one is really a rare find. It was a one-page story that doubled as an advertisement for a convention where I was a guest and ran in their mailer booklet and in the convention’s program book.

Illustrations in Frontier are by Bobby Nash and Jeff Austin.
--

Publishing Frontier has been on my to do list for some time, but was constantly being pushed to the back burner as other projects and deadlines move to the foreground. Some of the stories included in the book were characters I had hoped to spin into more adventures, like Doc Dresden, who appeared in a few comic book stories I may have to dig up and reprint soon. Just Another Saturday on Outpost 9 and The Drop were also part of a shared universe, seeing events happening from different perspectives. There have been times when I’ve thought about returning to those respective universes, and I may still. Stranger things have certainly happened.

Others are one offs or bits and pieces I had lying around while others are connected in weird ways. The plot for Midway, for instance, was originally one I considered as a sequel to Samaritan, but then decided not to do. I felt that Samaritan should stand on its own and that a sequel wasn’t really warranted, but it was still a tempting idea so when a call came out for a [SPOILER] anthology, I used that plot. I put that spoiler there so as not to spoil a reveal in the story. Ain’t I a tease? Sadly, the anthology’s editor passed on Midway, but I’m excited to see it finally getting out to the masses.

Speaking of Midway, look for an announcement regarding this story real soon. It’s pretty cool stuff, I think.

One of the most fun aspects of this particular project was creating the covers for each story. I had a lot more fun creating those than I expected, so much so that I hope to do more. A lot of the art used in the covers was older pieces I had laying around from old projects Jeff Austin and I started together that, for one reason or another, were never completed. I think some of them came out quite nice. I hope you like them as well.

Look for an official press release for FRONTIER in a few days.

I look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts on the new release.

Now, I guess I’d better get back to writing the Evil Intent novel.

Bobby
