Ten Interview Questions for the Next Big Thing:
What is your working title of your book?
BN: I’m currently putting the finishing touches on an as yet untitled Domino Lady novel for Moonstone Books new thriller novel line.
Where did the idea come from for the book?
BN: Moonstone publisher, JoeGentile, asked me if I was interested in writing a pulpy political thriller starring Domino Lady and I said “Yes!” immediately. In the original Domino Lady series from the 1930s, Rob Wyatt was a character Domino Lady locked horns with who had ambitions to be Governor of California. That story was never told. When I started writing Domino Lady stories for Moonstone I would mention Wyatt and his desire to be Governor, although it was never the main plot.
When Joe said pulpy political thriller, Rob Wyatt was the first thing that popped into my head. It’s like I had been subconsciously planting the seeds for this story since writing “Target: Domino Lady” for the Moonstone anthology a few years back. I love it when serendipity happens.
What genre does your book fall under?
BN: Domino Lady is pulp and a political thriller all rolled into one.
Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
BN: I have always thought that Jeri Ryan would make a great Domino Lady, especially after seeing Dan Brereton’s cover to Domino Lady Vs. Mummy. I think she would be perfect as both socialite party girl Ellen Patrick and sultry adventuress Domino Lady. I could also see Jeri Ryan pulling off the 1930's Hollywood glamorous look.
Rob Wyatt has to look like a politician and a movie star who has a way with the ladies, but can also turn sinister. I think George Clooney certainly fits the bill. He doesn't play the bad guy often, but I think he has the acting chops to pull it off.
What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
BN: When gubernatorial candidate Douglas Hart is assassinated, Domino Lady makes it her mission to bring his murderers to justice.
Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
BN: Neither. The Domino Lady novel will be published by
Moonstone Books as part of their new Moonstone Thrillers line.
How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
BN: It took a couple of months to get the first draft down. I worked on the novel in spurts around other deadlines.
What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
BN: Good question. I really haven’t thought about comparisons before. I don’t have any examples off the top of my head. Obviously, there are a lot of other pulp stories and political thrillers out there. I would hope that Domino Lady can compare to them.
Who or what inspired you to write this book?
BN: It all started when the publisher asked if I was interested in writing a pulp political thriller. From there I started putting ideas together and we were off.
What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
BN: I try very hard to make sure that my Domino Lady stories remain part of the same narrative that has gone before. By that, I mean that my Domino Lady is the same Domino Lady that appeared in the original 1930’s tales, but is also the same character that has been appearing in Moonstone Books titles as well. That sometimes means bringing in the supporting characters from those tales, or acknowledging things that happen in those stories when appropriate.
The Domino Lady novel will be available in 2013 with a cover by
Douglas Klauba.
