CHAPTER ONE

Jimmy Dugan had big dreams.

Ever since a chance meeting with the notorious Mafioso, Miles Prince, young Jimmy fancied himself a made man. No job was too small or menial in Jimmy’s mind as long as it kept him in Mr. Prince’ good graces. Despite his growing popularity as a mover and shaker in Hollywood, Miles Edward Prince, the self styled Prince of Hollywood was not the honest businessman he wanted everyone to believe him to be.

Prince was a man accustomed to getting what he wanted.

All The Prince had to do was ask and like an eager beaver young Jimmy Dugan was on it.

Despite a lofty self-image, Jimmy Dugan was a very small fish in a rather impressively large pond. A pond which grew larger every day, threatening to wash over the greater United States of America with a crashing roar not unlike that of a monstrous tidal wave.

Jimmy might have been a small fish, but he was making strides to elevate his position.

He had big plans.

For the last couple years, as he reached his mid twenties, he had tried to rid himself of the Young Jimmy Dugan description, but with little success. None of the Big Bosses, or Cappo’s as they had been called recently, could bring themselves to refer to him as James.

No, he was going to be Young Jimmy Dugan for the rest of his natural life. Even if he lived to be a hundred and twenty.

Unfortunately, the one thing he never suspected, was that Young Jimmy Dugan would not even make it to twenty-six.

On the occasion of the day of his birth, the Bosses pulled together and threw a party, a real splash of an event at the Hollywood Ritz, the most expensive hotel in all of Tinsel Town. Not that it was a birthday party for the youngster. The fact that it was held on his birthday was merely a coincidence.

Not that it mattered to him.

The all star bash brought out many faces Jimmy knew well. Not only was The Family well represented by some of its most notable members, even a few of Hollywood’s growing A-list made the invite list thanks to his bosses’ standing in the moving picture business.

Jimmy could scarcely contain his excitement when Rob Wyatt, star of some of his favorite manly movies sauntered in with a gorgeous woman clinging to each arm, their eyes glittering with excitement. Meeting some of his favorite actors had been exciting, but there were even better diversions than rubbing elbows with the rich and famous.

The women.

Though most of the starlets arrived “fashionably late,” Jimmy did not seem to mind. He was having the time of his life. Displaying a suave demeanor he usually could not muster around women, Jimmy sauntered over to a pair of lovelies in his best Rob Wyatt impersonation.

It worked like a charm.

Dizzy with excitement, the rest of the night was a blur. He danced, laughed, and kissed as many luscious lips as possible.

Then she walked in.

Every man turned as she graced the room.

Turning heads was obviously nothing new to this blonde bombshell. Her stride was purposeful, elegant. Each step revealed just the right amount of enticingly silk covered legs as the willowy dress flowed around them as if made of air. Her every movement, every feature was nothing short of dazzling.

She was so intoxicating that Jimmy Dugan thought his heart might explode simply at the sight of her.

Even more amazing was that she was walking straight toward him.

She smiled as she stopped before him, her plump lips forming a perfect O shape as she started to say his name. She kissed him, a light brush of her lips against his that sent electric shocks throughout his body. So full of fire was she that Jimmy half expected he might burst into flame.

“Would you care to go for a walk?” she asked, making each syllable as sugary as the sweetest pastry. Although he could not remember forming the words to answer, she nonetheless took his arm and led him outside as the catcalls and applause of Jimmy’s friends and Bosses receded into the background.

Jimmy felt as though he was walking on air as they reached the garden walk just outside the fancy midtown hotel where the bash was being held. The Bosses had even pitched in for him a room for the evening when they had learned it was his birthday.

Finally alone, he turned to face the beauty, his fingers tracing the contour of her slender neckline, feeling the even rhythm of her pulse and the rise of goose pimples on her skin under the gentle touch of his youthful, not yet callused fingers.

She leaned in close and he inhaled her sweet perfume. It reminded him of frolicking in a field of wild flowers, much as he had only dreamt of doing with a woman like this. A woman the likes of which he had only glimpsed in his deepest dreams.

She whispered in his ear, the heat from her voice tickling his earlobe as she asked him to take her upstairs.

Minutes later they were alone in his suite with a spectacular view of the Hollywood Hills, the full moon burning brightly in the cloudless sky. Jimmy pulled her close, feeling the warmth of her pressed against him. She excited him like no other woman had and he told her as much.

She cooed as he nuzzled her neck. His hands caressed her shoulders as they traveled lower, sliding the tiny straps of the silky sheen dress from her shoulders. She did not protest as the straps fell off her slender shoulders.

She nibbled on his ear, something no woman had ever done for young Jimmy Dugan. He liked it and, between gasps for breath, begged her not to stop.

Then he felt a new sensation, a small sting just behind the ear.

Then everything went dark.

CHAPTER TWO

Jimmy Dugan woke to sunlight.

Filtering through the open blinds on his windows, a shaft of brilliant early morning sunlight hit his face. He winced as the brightness only added to the buzzing of his brain by setting off photographer’s flashbulbs behind his eyes. His head ached, but he knew last night had been worth it.

Not that his brain was working well enough to remember any of it.

He rolled over, anxious for another look at the woman he escorted back to his hotel suite the evening before. She was so beautiful, especially those thick, perfectly plump lips.

She was gone.

“Hey?” he called, looking around the room. “Where’d you go?”

Had she left? He had not even heard her get out of bed. In fact, he could not actually remember getting into bed. Maybe she’d stepped out for breakfast and could not get back in. That’s it, he decided. She has locked herself out.

Jimmy sat up.

Something cold grabbed his arms.

Had he been thinking straight, warning bells would have been going off inside his brain. Instead, he stared at the handcuffs holding his right arm to the headboard with a child’s curiosity.

Then he heard footsteps approaching down the hall.

“Oh, very funny,” he said, smiling as the door to his suite opened quietly, with not so much as a squeak. A sure sign of a high-class establishment.

Instantly, his smile faded.

Fear replaced joy as he stared down the barrel of a very large gun.

“Hey!” he shouted. “Hey! Hey! Hey! That’s not funny!”

“That all depends, Jimmy Boy,” a familiar voice said. “On which side of the gun you’re looking at.”

Charlotte Comicon Roundup

I was a guest at the Charlotte Comicon on March 20 in Charlotte, NC. Like the Atlanta Comic Convention, this show is a fantastic one day show with great deals on books (personally, I rained the $.10 boxes and found some great older comics for only a dime each) and some really cool creators. Fellow guest, Mike Gordon and I traveled the great interstate 85 to and from the convention and even made a sidetrip to add to our LCS Tour. Mike should have a write up on that visit soon at his Step Up To The Mike blog, which you can find at http://newlegendmike.blogspot.com/.

As usual, I posted the entire photo gallery on my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/bobbyenash. I hope you'll check them out.

You can learn more about the Charlotte Comicon at http://www.charlottecomicon.com/.
Their next show is Sunday, July 31st.

A Lance Star: Sky Ranger Excerpt: “WHERE THE SEA MEETS THE SKY” by Bobby Nash

Here's an excerpt from Bobby's story “Where The Sea Meets The Sky” from Volume One of the Lance Star: Sky Ranger pulp anthology series still on sale at http://gopulp.info, your local bookstore or your favorite on-line retailer.

Lance Star: Sky Ranger
“WHERE THE SEA MEETS THE SKY”
Bobby Nash

I - BLINDSIDED

Lance Star did not see the attack coming until it was too late.

The first punch startled him. Catching him by surprise, the hit caused him to lose his precious balance. Before he could regain his footing, a second blow caught him just under the chin. That shot sent him flying over the wooden chairs and onto the old wobbly table.

The table was old, worn out from years of abuse and usage. It was not strong enough to support the added weight of the pilot and its legs gave way under impact, dropping Lance to the floor along with the contents of the table.

Stunned, Lance hit the floor one second before the rain of assorted mixed nuts and lukewarm beer splattered across him.

Lance was on his feet in an instant. “Who the hell hit me?” he demanded, although a quick glance around the room provided the answer.

Not far away stood a lumbering mountain of a man named Niles Isburgh. No longer concerned with the stunned air ace, he was now laughing heartily with his friends, presumably at Lance’s expense. Swilling beer and telling tall tales rounded out his activities. He had already turned his back on Lance. He was the only one in the place that was not watching the scene with some perverse satisfaction. That certainly moved him to the top of Lance’s list of suspects.

That and the fact that there was no love lost between the two pilots. This was not their first tussle and somehow, Lance suspected, it would not be their last.

Normally when their paths crossed, Lance gave the ill-tempered bruiser a wide berth. Not that the man’s size or strength intimidated Lance, but sometimes putting up with another pilot’s ego was not worth the effort.

That was a given in Ice’s case.

Usually.

But not today.

Enough is enough!

“Ice!” Lance shouted. “You’d better have a damned good reason for this!”

Isburgh turned and wiped drink and crumbs from his thick, matted beard with the back of his hand. People had been calling him Ice since he was a teenager because of his last name. However, the moniker became widely used once his hair turned pure white.

When Ice saw the anger burning in Lance’s eyes, he could not help but let loose another belly laugh. These two men had never really liked one another. Isburgh thought Lance was a pretentious, glory-seeking showoff.

Lance simply thought Ice was an ass.

“Well, well, well,” Ice sneered. “If it ain’t the Air Ace himself, Lance Star!” He drew out the “L” like an air show announcer might. Another round of laughter filled the room as Ice’s cohorts joined in with their leader. “What brings ye to my slice of the world, Lancey Boy?”

“I am in no mood for this, Ice. I’m just in town to see some old friends, take in a little sun, and shake down my new plane. I’ve got no beef with you.”

“Yeah, right,” Ice said as he downed another gulp. “Don’t presume t’ lie to me, Lancey Boy. I know exactly why you’re here.”

“Care to enlighten me,” Lance said as he rubbed his aching jaw. Ice hit like a prizefighter. “Because you seem to know a hell of a lot more about it than I do.”

“Don’t kid a kidder, Lancey Boy. You’re here for the treasure just like the rest of us, ain’t ye?”

“Treasure?” Lance was confused. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“Okay, so we’re going t’ play it that way, are we?”

Lance stood his ground. “I really have no idea what you’re talking about, Ice. I promise.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“That’s your problem,” Lance said. “You’re drunk so I’m willing to let bygones be bygones here if…”

“I’m not!” Ice interrupted as he took another swing at the ace pilot from the mainland.

This time, however, Lance was ready for him. He easily sidestepped the big man’s clumsy punch. Impeded by drink, Isburgh was no match for his more agile, and sober, opponent. He would not get the chance to sucker punch him as he had before.

Lance used the man’s own momentum against him and helped him to the floor.

“Stay down, Ice,” Lance said as he rested a boot on his attacker’s back.

Before Ice could mutter a reply, his friends took a step toward Lance, who steeled himself for a fight. Suddenly, he wished he’d brought either Buck or Red with him. A wingman would have come in handy at the moment, considering the odds. He had a gun tucked into a shoulder holster under his flight jacket, but knew that pulling it would elevate this from a simple bar squabble into something a lot worse so he decided against that option quickly.

Fortunately for Lance, one step was all they were going to get.

From nearby someone cleared his throat loudly, a subtle way of asking what was going on without actually saying the words. “Am I interrupting something?” Andrew Stewart asked from the bar.

Lance’s eye lit up at the sight of the newcomer. “Drew!” he called happily. It was a rare thing for a man in a bar fight would be thrilled to see the local constabulary walk in. Then again, Lance Star was not your average man.

And he had just flown across the Pacific to see the man after all.

“In town less than an hour and already causing trouble, eh Lance?”

“What can I say? These things happen.”

“To you, maybe.” Commander Andrew Stewart of the United States Navy said as he pointed at the man lying on the floor. “Would you mind letting him up?” he asked twitching the finger he had pointed at the clearly irritated Isburgh.

“Hmm? Oh, right,” Lance said playfully, as if he had forgotten the inebriated treasure hunter was down there. He removed his foot and allowed the big man the chance to get to his feet. He offered a hand to help, but Ice would not accept it.

Drew nodded toward the man who had entered with him. “You guys want me to have the Lieutenant Keyona here take you guys downtown or would you rather just shake on it and call it a day?” he asked.

Lance, offering an olive branch, stuck out a hand.

Reluctantly, Ice shook it tightly.

“Much better,” Stewart said as he pointed toward Lance. “What say you and I take a walk.”

“Sounds like a mighty fine idea,” Lance chuckled.

Drew looked to the pilot he had just rescued. “Ice,” he said.

Isburgh nodded and simply said, “Drew.”

Moments later, Lance and Andrew were walking along the beach, staring out at the most beautiful sunset either man had ever seen.

“Now there’s a sight,” Lance said as he marveled at the brilliant washes of red, orange, and purple that filled the crystal clear dusk sky. “There’s just something about sunsets in paradise,” he said with a smile.

“Welcome to Hawaii, Lance. I’m glad you could make it.”

ORIGINAL PRESS RELEASE:

Airship 27 Productions and Cornerstone Book Publishers take to the skies with the release of their reprint edition of LANCE STAR – SKY RANGER. This collection of new stories starring the long forgotten pulp hero was the first anthology title produced by Airship 27 Prod. dated 2006. Its overwhelming success helped launch the company’s ambitious plans to bring back classic pulp characters in brand new adventures. “Without LANCE STAR – SKY RANGER, there probably would have been no Airship 27 Prod.” claimed Editor Ron Fortier. “It was the book that got us going.”

This anthology features four action packed tales of Lance and his loyal Sky Rangers. They include, Attack of the Birdman by Frank Dirscherl, Where the Sea Meets the Sky by Bobby Nash, Shadows Over Kunlun by Win Scott Eckert and Talons of the Red Condor by Bill Spangler with cover and interior art by comic pro, Rich Woodall of Johnny Raygun fame.

The book also contains an article on the history of the character by Norman Hamilton and a second on airplane modeling in the 1930s and 40s by Larry Marshall. Included as an added bonus feature for this new edition is an excerpt from Bobby Nash’s full length novel, Lance Star – Sky Ranger: 1941 – The Road to War, coming soon! [update: THE NOVEL’S TITLE HAS SINCE CHANGED.]

A Fistful of Legends excerpt: SHADOWS ON THE HORIZON by Bobby Nash

Here's an excerpt from Bobby's story from the A Fistful of Legends anthology from Express Westerns, still on sale at http://stores.lulu.com/expresswesterns or your favorite on-line retailer.

SHADOWS ON THE HORIZON
by Bobby Nash

Doc Brand felt the rocks bite into his knees as he hit the ground.

Dust billowed around him as slumped over onto his back. Eyes shut against the punishing bright glare of the sun, he lay there, contemplating whether or not it was even worth the effort to try and get back on his wobbly feet or if he should just keep his eyes closed and wait for the inevitable. He was bruised, battered, and the last coughing fit that racked his beaten body had brought up blood.

Doc had worked the county of Rock Creek for just a little under twenty years. There wasn’t a man, woman, or child within a day’s ride that he hadn’t tended to in some fashion or another in all that time. He had always believed that his patients respected him for his years of devoted service.

Until today.

At best, he weighed a buck fifty on a good day. Of late, he’d been losing weight, despite continuing to eat normally. He had also noticed a slight tremor in his right hand that had not been there before. He wasn’t sure when the shaking had started, but he found it disconcerting, to say the least.

After a while, he found the strength to pull himself to his feet yet again. Every time he fell or simply stopped, swaying under the weight of his torment, he became disoriented.

Once the world stopped spinning wildly around him, he eyed the sun and the shadows of cactus and reckoned where he needed to go. On unsteady legs, he made his way across the hard land, the sun beating down on him and burning the back of his neck.

Despite his bruised knees and aching bloody body, Doc Brand set his chin and started walking again while through cracked lips he cursed the vultures who circled above as well as the men who had left him in this predicament.

* * *

It started like any other day: he’d woken early. As was his routine, he walked up onto the hill at the edge of his property and watched the sun rise. Since he had been a young boy he got a thrill out of watching the sun burn away the shadows on the horizon as the darkness retreated before the coming day. He never considered himself the literary type, but he found something about mornings to be almost poetic.

While the sun climbed, Doc fed the horses, checked the coop for a fresh collection of eggs, and filled the trough for the fat, lazy pig the Leonard’s had given him as payment for looking after old Pa Leonard when he fell ill last winter. After a breakfast of runny fried eggs, a fresh apple from the tree out back, and a couple cups of black, steamy coffee, he felt ready for his final chore, sweeping the morning dust off the front porch. He’d only half completed this task, however, when he heard the unmistakable thundering echo of hoofs on dry earth that announced the approach of visitors. And from the sound of it, they were riding in fast.

It was rare that anyone stopped by to see him for any reason other than a medical emergency. Even those were fewer and far between since his semi-retirement. His replacement had a handle on things in town, but a few of his more stubborn patients didn’t like being treated by someone as young as Doctor Thomas Porter so they still came to him on occasion. By the time two of the three riders dismounted by his front gate, he had already grabbed his medical bag from the bedroom closet. He was waiting on the top step off the porch.

“Doc!” a familiar voice shouted.

“Everett,” he called back. “What’s the matter?”

A young man, barely a day over eighteen, ran to the porch, kicking up a trail of dust in his wake. Doc knew the lad well. He had been there when the boy had been born and had helped him through colds and a couple broken bones over the years. “Doc! It’s my cousin Billy,” Everett Gordon shouted. “He’s been hurt!”

“Get him up here!”

Everett whistled and motioned toward the two young men to come closer. One man stayed on the horse while his friend walked the animal to the edge of the porch, using one hand to keep the horse reined in and the other to steady the swaying man in the saddle.

“This is Billy, Doc,” Everett said as he helped the injured man off the horse. “An’ this here is Jess Taylor.”

Doc nodded a quick greeting while Billy’s arms were supported on the shoulders of his two friends. As Doc checked Billy’s belly wound, blood pooled on the porch and spilt on the ground.

“Everett, this boy’s been shot!”

A Super Weekend In Metropolis!

I spent the weekend in Metropolis, IL for Fandomfest Metropolis Supercon. Unfortunately, the cold and rainy weather kept the attendance lower than we would have liked, but the folks who came out were enthusiastic and some even bought some of my books, which I always appreciate.

"Hi. Please come and take a look at my books."

Outside of the convention, I visited Metropolis' own Superman Museum and Americana Museum, and Riverfront casino with my pal and con-neighbor, Mike Gordon.
"They fight a never-ending battle for Truth, Justice, and The American Way."

The museum's are incredible and were worth the trip alone. If you've not been, I highly recommend it

"Hold on a sec, Clark. I'm on the phone."

The Superman museum covers all things Superman, as you might imagine. There are props, costumes, photos, you name it from all of the TV series, movies, cartoons, as well as toys, comics, cups, toys, roadsigns, etc. You can easily spend hours and hours in this place.

"This looks like a job for..."

"Who is this Lex Luthor guy?"

The Americana Museum boasts having the largest Justice League of America exhibit in the world and I believe it.

Magic.

There are also sections devoted to robots, Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, classic and modern movie monsters, superheroes (there was a nice collection of Green Hornet and Kato masks as well as the Bat-Shield from the 60's series, a western section, Tomb Raider, section, and so much more.

Sittin' for a spell in western alley.

I'm posting photos on Twitter Twitpics www.twitter.com/bobbynash and on Facebook www.facebook.com/bobbyenash. Please check them out.
