Bobby Nash is ready for Free Comic Book Day to begin. |
I spent this year's Free Comic Book Day (FCBD for short) at Richard's Comics and Collectables in Greenville, SC. As I discovered last year when I also spent FCBD in Greenville at Borderlands, Greenville's comic fans come out in droves for their FCBD events. Although I didn't have any work appearing in the comic books that were available for free to customers, I decided to spend the day doing free sketches for whoever wanted one. Richard even had pre-printed FCBD sketch cards made, which added a professional look to my scratchy scribbles.
My day started early. I was up at 6 a.m. to get on the road from Atlanta to Greenville, which takes between 2 - 2 1/2 hours depending on traffic and speed traps (tip: slow down when you cross into South Carolina). I arrived a little earlier than I needed to be there, but that was okay. I watched the store's parking lot transform into artist alley as the tents went up and tables slid into place. As much as an hour before the store opened, the fans started showing up and the line wrapped along and down the side of the building. It was great to see the fans who came dressed in costume as well. There were many photo ops.
I started drawing almost immediately after setting up my table so I could show off my books. The drawings I did are pasted below. I'm not the fastest artist, but I think the cards came out well. I drew non-stop from a little before 11 a.m. until a little after 7 p.m. I think I got up once or twice to stretch, but otherwise I was right there doodling away. I don't know how guys like George Perez do this week in and week out at conventions. I definitely have a new found respect for artists sketching at cons.

Wow! Looks like you and the kids (big and small) had a lot of fun!
A great time was indeed had by all, Mark. It was a fun, fun day. I was completely sore and exhausted when it was over (my back and hands were killing me), but it was worth it. Had some great conversations about comics, The Avengers (naturally!), and Doctor Who. Definitely a fun day.
