"Why read a story when you can read a yarn? All yarns are stories, but not all stories get to be yarns. To be a yarn, a story has to be both entertaining and imaginative. Reading a yarn is leaving your credulity at the door and entering a dimension of “not only of sight and sound, but of mind...” (thank you Rod Serling, and yes, the best of those old “Twilight Zone” episodes were magnificent yarns).
Yarns are fast paced, exciting, and tightly written. This last qualification alone eliminates most fiction writing today. Ever read a bloated, fat fantasy novel? If so, my condolences. This book, “Thrilling Adventure Yarns 2025,” will be a good palette cleanser.
Edited by Robert Greenberger, this book has 15 yarns that hearken back to the glorious pulp days of yore (albeit with a contemporary flavor). You will find tales of the occult, crime, fantasy, science fiction – and some best categorized as “Holy crap, was that really a giant armadillo?”
I burned through all 15 tales. Some are better than others, but they're all good. Now, I'm checking out the rest in the series. I recommend you do, too – unless, of course, you're stuck in the middle of that 600-page “romantasy.” If that's the case, I know a dark sorcerer or two who can help."
Thanks again, Bob! I'm glad you dug the giant armadillo. :)
