THIS LOOKS LIKE A JOB FOR...

I 100% agree with Neil. I have heard creators in the past say that it's hard to write Superman in the modern age or that Superman doesn't work in modern storytelling. If you are ever offered the chance to write Superman and your first thought its that Superman is no longer relevant or cannot be written for a modern audience, the problem is not with the character. It simply means you aren't the right writer to work on Superman. Superman, much like Captain America stands for an ideal. We may never reach that ideal, but these characters show us that ideal and help us fight the never-ending battle to achieve it.

It's funny, on the one hand, Warner Brothers and DC are saying this about Superman on the big screen and comic books while many of us are celebrating the return of three... yes, three different versions of Superman on Crisis on Infinite Earths on the CW. Maybe someone at Warner Brothers should watch the crossover.

Personally, I have turned down and walked away from some projects over the years because I did not think I was the right writer for them. The biggest moneymaker I walked away from is Sherlock Holmes. I was not convinced that I was the right person to write new stories in the style of the original Holmes tales. I remain convinced today that I made the right decision. I don't want to do anything halfway.

Anyway, I agree with Neil.

BOBBY'S MOVIE REVIEW: SHAZAM

I remember seeing a trailer for an upcoming comic book movie. The trailer was played up for laughs, the comedy a bit silly for my taste. Then, I saw the movie and was blown away by it and it became one of my favorite movies of all time. That movie was Guardians of the Galaxy.

The trailer for Shazam played much the same or me. Too much emphasis on silly comedy that fell flat for me. Still, remembering that I have been fooled by trailers before, I went to see Shazam and... well, I was not blown away, but I came out having seen an okay movie.

There may be spoilers ahead. You've been warned.

I have read some Captain Marvel comics over the years, though I haven't read as much since DC Comics stopped being allowed to call him that. I am not as much of a fan of this character as say Captain America or Thor so I went in not really knowing more than the basics of the Shazam family history. Yes, I did geek out upon seeing Mr Mind, so there's that. It was cool seeing Mary Marvel as well, the only other member of the family I knew much about and who I actually like better than Billy's champion (who never actually gets a real code name in the movie).

I should probably point out that, even though I went in with an open mind, I am not the biggest fan of the actor playing "the champion" so that may color my opinion a bit. Nothing personal. I just haven't liked him in anything I've seen him in. He has some moments in this, but for the most part, I got nothing.

The action is good and the effects are on par with the other superhero movies out there, but there were no real surprises there. What really stands out for me int his movie is the family dynamic of the foster home and the relationship between the parents and their foster kids. All hands on deck, indeed. 3 stars for the family dynamic. I loved it. Well cast too.

What didn't really click for me is our hero. After 45 years of searching for someone pure of heart, the best the wizard's power could find was this kid who is rude, a smart ass, a thief, and as gets pointed out to him, a bit of a bully. Throughout the movie, my brain kept interrupting with thoughts of, "really? This guy is pure of heart?" And when he gets the power, he gets worse. Ugh. He also seems to get dumber int he adult body too, which is an odd choice, I thought. Admittedly, Billy does grow a bit in the course of the movie, but only a bit.

Mark Strong is a passable bad guy who doesn't resemble any Dr. Sivana I've see before, but that's okay. He's kind of a one note character at any rate, a pawn of the true villains of the movie.

All in all, I found the movie enjoyable. I'm sure I will watch it again at some point and perhaps multiple viewings will improve my rating. It's a fun, safe, family superhero movie.

Who's stalking Negative Man?

Who is that not-so-subtle government agent following Negative Man in Doom Patrol episode 2? You see him back there with the sunglasses, watching ever so closely? Can he be trusted? Who does he work for? Why does he seem so familiar? (hint: he's me) Should DC have him appear again? (the answer to that last one is a big ol' YES!)

Thanks to Earth Station DCU podcast host Drew Leiter for sharing the screen capture. I haven't been able to watch yet. Speaking of ESDCU, I'll be on their show next week talking Snow Falls, which was just released as an audio book as well as my appearance in this episode.

I'm not in the last photo, but this was the location. I'm standing beside the bus on the right.

WONDER WOMAN NOVELIZATION ANNOUNCED!

Not really news about me or my books, but I am so excited for my friend, Nancy Holder. It was announced today that she is writing the novelization of the upcoming Wonder Woman movie for Titan Books. I think that's a perfect fit and am very excited for her and to read the book and watch the movie. Nancy and I have been friends for years and have worked on a few assorted Domino Lady stories together during that time. She's a great writer and friend and I hope everyone will pick this up when it hits bookstore shelves in June. Learn more about the novel here.
Congratulations, Nancy!

SO, I MAY HAVE GEEKED OUT JUST A LITTLE...

The email that made Bobby's head explode.  :)

Okay, I don't geek out often, but when I do it's because of cool stuff like this.

Mark Hamill as The Trickster
So, I'm loving the CW series, The Flash. It's a fantastic show and loads of fun. Last season, Mark Hamill, you might know him as Luke Freakin' Skywalker!, reprised his role as The Trickster from the 1990's Flash TV series. On last night's episode, The Trickster returned and ark Hamill stole the show and chewed quite a bit of scenery too. It was a great episode and afterward, I posted the above note of appreciation for the episode and Mark's portrayal in particular.

Then I woke up to a message stating that Mark had liked the post, which kind of geeked me out just a bit, something that doesn't happen to me too often. I've been a fan since I first saw Star Wars back in 1977 (yes, I'm that old) and also absolutely love his portrayal of The Joker in various Batman shows, movies, and games. And then there's the video below, which you've probably seen if you've visited here before, is one of my Favorite. Things. Ever.

Anyway, I just wanted to share that with the handful of you who stop by the site. It truly made my day.
