THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED?

This is the road I try to travel on daily. It's a twisty, turn-filled road with lots of cliffs, but I do love the view.
Happy Easter.

HAPPY EASTER!

I thought about saying something sentimental, but decided to go the light and fun route instead.
Happy Easter.

ABOUT iPULP
"With the whole world wallowing in pointless, plotless fiction, iPulp greets the reader like a breath of fresh adrenaline." -- David Lubar, Award-winning author of Hidden Talents

In the past, dime novels and other forms of pulp fiction influenced writers of genre fiction such as Ray Bradbury, Raymond Chandler, and H. P. Lovecraft. It was a time when kids carried a dime novel folded in their hip pocket or nestled out of sight in their schoolbooks.

Today, the pulps are mostly gone. iPulpFiction.com reinvents the genre short story market by taking pulp fiction to the mobile generation — to be hidden among digital textbooks on a tablet or tucked away on a smartphone in a hip pocket.

OF BAREFOOT BONES, BROKEN EAGLES, AND SHOULDN'T YOU BE WORKING?

I'm sure my family and friends say this about me a lot.

Not actual cover.
I just realized that it has been a while since I've posted a writing update. Back in late January I started a new day job to help pay some bills. As you can imagine, this has slowed my writing down somewhat-- not to mention having the unavoidable side effect of making me exhausted. Thankfully, I work with some incredibly understanding publishers who understood why my output would slow down and extended deadlines to help accommodate my new work schedule. Hats off to each of them. It's always a wonderful treat to work with such great people.

So, with that being said, I'm starting to get used to my new schedule-- although I don't think there will ever come a day where I get used to the idea of getting out of bed at 5:30 a.m., but that's a ran for another day. After turning in my story for The Ruby Files Vol. 2 to Airship 27 this past weekend, I started preliminary work on my upcoming Fight Card novel for Fight Card Books called "Barefoot Bones" this week.

White Rocket Books
It took a while to get started tonight, but I managed to get 800 words down on a short story due to White Rocket Books for an anthology Van and his crew are putting together. I let the deadline sneak up on me for this one, but I should be able to get it finished in time. Until White Rocket announces the book, I can't say much about it, but it should be a fun one. I'm adapting an older comic book script I've had around for several years called "Showdown at Broken Eagle" for this project. I'm happy to finally get this story out there because I really enjoy how it came together. Keep watching this space for more details as I'm allowed to share them.

Not actual cover.
Once I finish that up, then it’s back to "Barefoot Bones" for Fight Card and then on to the Domino Lady/Honey west team-up novel for Moonstone Books.

Oh, if only there were more hours in the way, eh?

The plan for tomorrow is more writing, plus I have some interesting interview questions to answer. Should be a fun, full day. I’m also debating whether or not to try and squeeze in a viewing of the new Olympus Has Fallen movie this weekend. It looks interesting. I guess it will depend on how much writing I accomplish. There's a lot of work to do and as my brother likes to remind me often, "Shouldn't you be working?"

But now it’s time for a little TV before drifting off into peaceful slumber.

My desktop wallpaper.
Yeah. That sounds like a good plan.

Let's talk again tomorrow.

Oh, and just a reminder that you can also find me on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. I love it when folks pop on there and say hi.

I'll try to get back to doing these regular updates on a more regular basis. If there's anything you'd like to hear me prattle on about, feel free to leave a comment or a question here or drop me an email at bobby@bobbynash.com.

BOBBY TALKS PULP ON THRILLERCAST

Smells like pulp to me.
I was thrilled (pun intended) to sit in with David Wood and Alan Baxter on the latest episode of the ThrillerCast- The Podcast for Readers and Writers of Thrillers podcast. We talked about writing in general and also discuss the New Pulp book market. We also discuss the definitions of pulp and New Pulp as well as what it takes to write a pulp yarn.

You can listen now at http://thrillerpodcast.blogspot.com/2013/03/episode-66-new-pulp-with-bobby-nash.html

ThrillerCast Episode 66- New Pulp with Bobby Nash

In this episode, David and Alan discuss "New Pulp" with Bobby Nash. We also take Random House to the woodshed for their new digital-first publishing contracts. More important, however, is the fact that Al finally bought a decent microphone. Woo hoo!

Our guest is author Bobby Nash.

What is the current state of "New Pulp?" Is it still alive and well, or is it on the decline?

What is New Pulp? Can it be defined? What are the common characteristics?

Newpulpfiction.com

How has e-publishing driven New Pulp?

Story length and pacing.

Who is writing or publishing New Pulp right now?

Who are some of the "classic" pulp writers?

What's happening with Bobby's work?

Nominated for Pulp Ark and Pulp Factory awards. Other writing projects. Comics and screenplays.

Writing for comics vs writing prose.

Advice for writers- if you want it to be your job, treat it like a job!

#####

Thanks again to David and Alan for having me on the show. It was a fun conversation. You should give it a listen. Here’s the link to listen to ThrillerCast Episode 66: http://thrillerpodcast.blogspot.com/2013/03/episode-66-new-pulp-with-bobby-nash.html

RICK RUBY STEPS IN IT AGAIN!

It's been awhile since I've posted any writing updates. Sadly, part of that has been due to my output slowing down a bit since I rejoined the ranks of those with a day job. Still, I am managing to get some work done, albeit a bit slower than before.  Today I worked on my story for The Ruby Files Vol. 2 today. Here's a taste of today's wordage as I get closer to the finish line. It still needs a polish, but it's coming along nicely.

#####

“Who are you after?”

No one answered.

“Come on,” Rick said. “Before I became a 'two-bit private detective' I was a cop. I might not be front and center on the game board, but I know this city and the players. I can help you.”

“I don’t think so,” Reardon groused.

“It’s clear you’re either after the Tommasso or Manelli family since they are the chief suppliers of girls in this town. I’ve certainly had my run ins with both,” Rick said. “Remember Derrick Shaunessey?”

“The name rings a bell. Mid-level thug for the Manelli’s until he left town in a hurry last year. What about him?”

“I helped him pack,” Ruby offered.

#####

And another:

“Are you insane?” Rick asked. “You want to take down the number two man on the totem pole? Even if you manage to put the snatch on him,” he looked at Agent Blake’s outfit, “his brother will rain down hell on your team trying to get him back.”

“You let us worry about that, Mr Ruby,” Reardon warned. “And I wouldn’t get too comfortable if I were you. Just because you aren’t handcuffed to a radiator somewhere doesn’t mean you’re a part of this team. We do not require, nor do we want, your help. You are here as a courtesy only. Try to remember that. One word from me and my men will bury you in the deepest, darkest hole we can find.”

Rick looked at Agent Lacy. “He really loves the sound of his own voice, doesn’t he?”

“You have no idea,” she said and rolled her eyes.

“If you two are finished with your Laurel and Hardy routine, what say we get this show on the road?”

“Of course,” Blake said. “I had better get into position. Everything ready?”

#####

I really do love writing this guy.

Bobby
