WE LOVE READER REVIEWS! PULP FICTION REVIEWS GIVES 5 STARS TO PULP REALITY #1!

WE LOVE READER REVIEWS! Big thanks to Ron Fortier for his kind words as Pulp Fiction Reviews checks out PULP REALITY # 1 and gives it 5 STARS! You can read the full review HERE and HERE.

"Wonderful New Pulp Collection. Kudos to writer/editor Charles F. Millhouse for creating as yet another pseudo/magazine devoted to New Pulp fiction. Note, PULP REALITY isn’t the first such as over the past decade or so various other outfits have tried their hands at bringing back that old style of storytelling. As with all such endeavors, this volume has its ups and downs, hits and misses. Let’s look at the good stuff first. This premier issue features seven fun stories, the majority of them well written. In fact a few are outright pulp gems.

“Showdown on Scavenger Quay” by Bobby Nash. Lance Star and Captain Hawklin to team up to battle on foes. We’ve always enjoyed stories bringing together heroes and Bobby Nash is one of the most well established, capable writers in New Pulp today as this tale clearly demonstrates.

“Reel One for the B-Man” by Clyde Hall. An old movie house is haunted by all but forgotten matinee cliffhanger heroes. The mere concept here is wonderful and any lover of classic cinema will be smiling broadly as the young hero finds himself morphing into well known heroes to bamboozle a group of biker thug thieves.

“Captain Hawklin and the Clockwork Buccaneer” by Brian K. Morris. A German operative steals American freighters enroute to England during Lend Lease. Though a decent story, we had the feeling the writer simply overcooked his stew with too many elements and it might have benefited with a touch more cutting.

“Testament of a Forgotten God” by Charles F. Millhouse. Captain Zane Carrington transports an aged professor to the middle of the Pacific Ocean for an appointment with Poseidon. Easily the best yarn in the book and masterfully told. Though the ending was no surprise, it was the one we hoped for. We really need to read more of his work. Going to recommend this one for the Pulp Factory Awards.

“Ace Anderson and the Curse of Doctor Atomika Part One” by Pete Lutz. Undersea adventure Ace Anderson and Huck Finn battle German agents attempting to gain the secret weapons of Atlantis. Fast paced and often times confusing, we could barely follow along as the narrative was so intent on action it left little room for characterization. Pulp is action and adventure, but we also need to believe the characters are real.

“Prepare to be Mr. Fye” by Pete Lutz. Detective Jinx Duncan has a special occult power bestowed upon him; that that might come in handy when going after criminals in the big city. This is another of those gems we mentioned earlier and as an original tale, it is delivered smoothly making us want to see what comes next.

“Mercury Rises” by Rick Bradley. Clock repairman and part time P.I. Jack Mercury is kidnapped into outer space and becomes the hero of his own fantastic adventure. Finally the entire collection ends on a grand note that clearly demands lots more. Bradley knows how to write and this one was fun. To repeat, a terrific way to lower the curtain on a spectacular first issue.

Okay, so now a personal critique. Whatever the publisher’s intent, the oversized format really doesn’t work. It is an awkward shape difficult to hold, even when reclining in one’s comfortable recliner. The average reader would appreciate its size made to conform to the actual classic pulp mags.

There you have it. PULP REALITY is fresh and exciting and off to a grand start. Here’s hoping it is around for a long time to come."

Thanks again, Ron, You can read the full review HERE and HERE.

Occupied: Pulp Launches in 2021!

On Wednesday, Flinch Books announced their next anthology project. I am thrilled to be part of Occupied: Pulp! Coming in 2021!

Press Release:
11/11/2020

Flinch fans! On this Veteran’s Day, Flinch Books is excited to announce the upcoming release of OCCUPIED: PULP, seven tales of action, adventure and mystery set in the aftermath of World War II.

When the war that defined the 20th century finally came to an end in 1945, the small-scale conflicts and skirmishes continued immediately afterward. The Allied occupation of Europe and Japan quickly became a hotbed of espionage and geopolitical intrigue — as well as a few mysteries that defied explanation.
OCCUPIED: PULP surveys that precarious post-war landscape with stories from six distinguished new pulp writers: Will Murray, William Patrick Maynard, James A. Moore, Patricia Gilliam, Bobby Nash and John C. Bruening. (with Jim Beard on the drums)

OCCUPIED: PULP is scheduled for release in the spring of 2021, but we’ll have plenty of updates in the months between now and then. Be sure to join us for the aftermath, Flinch fans! The war is over, but the action continues!

Follow Flinch Books on Facebook for updates.

WE LOVE READER REVIEWS! THE DEVIL'S DUE ANTHOLOGY NABS A NEW 4 STAR REVIEW!

WE LOVE READER REVIEWS! Big thanks to Rob W for his in-depth review and 4 STAR Amazon Reader Review. You can read the full review HERE or below.

"Sometimes it’s Karma, sometimes it’s poor luck. When I first picked up this anthology, I had the idea that the theme was obvious: bad people getting their just deserts. I’m a fan of the karma come home to play genre, and so many of these stories really hit that mark for me, and adding in real demonology and lore just makes it all the sweeter… but the anthology actually has a different message and that message is shouted with every single tale: if you mess with dark forces you will always suffer for it.

Good intentions? Too bad. Innocent mistake? So sad. If you play a game with demons, devils, or other dark forces, you’re not going to come out of it on top. This isn’t an anthology of redemption or lessons being learned, except perhaps for the reader. A few stories left me feeling satisfied, others crushed, but not a one of them really leaves you feeling happy—and that’s great, that’s not the theme here!

I don’t want to post tons of spoilers, but I’ll point out my favorite stories."

First, The Devil You Know by Shane Nelson - I love this story because it hits the deal with a devil tropes that I love. This is someone with deep pain and an impossible choice to make. Except it shouldn’t even be a choice, it shouldn’t be something anyone should ever have to choose, and it’s arguably not something he needs to… but temptation is heavy, and this story does well showing that the relief a choice can bring is often short lived and the result can be a weight that’s far worse than anything you’ve ever feared.

Second, Identity Theft by Rachel A. Brune – This one I also love because it hits the demon contract trope but it does so in a far more unique way and I have to give huge credit for how the main character was written! In truth, I wasn’t sure what gender they were and it doesn’t actually distract from the story at all. It was refreshing to see and doesn’t come across as if it were done for a shock feature or even as a way to draw a crowd, it’s simply written as a great story. They are an alcoholic and you learn as you read that they likely have a good reason for being so. I found myself cheering for them despite their flaws, and the world they create, the lore, the depth to the magic… I’d read an entire series with them.

Third, Saddie’s Choices by Ravyn Crescent – Also fits the trope but has more of a romance element to it than the other stories. This girl did a bad thing that’s gory and terrible. She summons Lucifer himself at the cross roads and gives up her soul in exchange for ten years of power and wealth—he throws in knowledge which may have been a mistake. Then she starts meeting demons. I liked that, much like with Identity Theft, real thought went into the demonology aspect. The demons mentioned are ones that you can look up, and it was very nice seeing research done and it made for some interesting scenes.

Fourth, Face It by Carol Gyzander – This one is a bit different! I don’t want to give spoilers for it but it’s hard to do. The premise is there, and since I have family with disabilities I really could feel for the story and it made me furious at times, sad at times, and in the end… I wouldn’t say it’s a total feeling of victory, it’s not a happy ending. This is a man who loved his wife despite the hardships but struggled with her illness. It’s a terrifying thought, because it can happen to any of us. One day you’re living your life, everything is going well enough, or as planned, or even just … going. And then one event, one doctor’s visit, one weird mark can halt everything and then you have to decide how to handle it. How many of us would struggle to manage a new life if we had to drastically change and there was no end to it? This story really does well asking that important question: If you love someone, how far would you go? But it takes it an important step further by asking: what road would you take? Because anyone can say they’d go to the end of the earth with someone, but are you the type who says you’ll help push a friend’s wheelchair or carry them up stairs, or are you the type to argue and fight to get ramps installed so that society is the one that has to adapt?

There are other gems in this anthology. The Resurrection and the Life by Jude Reid is very well written and gripping, making it hard to put down though the imagery did turn my stomach a few times—as intended I imagine!

Genevieve and the owl by Mark Allan Gunnells is a dark fairytale which is, of course, always fun.

Here Comes Mr. Herribone by Tim Jeffreys was also well written and the imagery it gives is exciting and refreshing.

If you enjoy stories about demonic contracts, this anthology is for you. If you want daring, last minute escapes, happy endings, blissful peace… you won’t like this anthology. And not every story is going to leave you feeling the same. Sometimes it’s like being torn from emotion to emotion, sometimes you feel sick to your stomach, sometimes you feel scared. It’s not always sneering at the misfortunes of others who have done wrong, it’s quite often forcing you to realize that these things can happen to anyone, even those who didn’t think they were involved, those who learned their lesson, or those who were simply in the wrong place…"

You can read the full review and more HERE.

Thanks again, Rob.

THIS WILL BE THE ONLY ONE...

I've been on the road all day with my dad. Did anything interesting happen while we were gone?

I kid, of course. Congratulations to President-Elect Biden and Vice-President-Elect Harris on their victory. I wish you and the American people success during your time in the White House. I know there's a long road ahead of us as we are a more divided nation than ever before that I can recall in my lifetime. We have a lot of work ahead of us.

As It do every time we elect a new President, I implore our new President and his staff to always remember that you work for, and in service to, the American people. Not the other way around. Not all leaders remember this very important part of the job.

I hope everyone can breathe a little easier now (everyone, whether your candidate won or lost) and return to some semblance of normality now that the unrelenting barrage of political posts and advertisements will begin to fade.

Okay, that's my political bit. I tend to shy away from publicly talking politics here on social media where I generally talk about geeky things and try to convince you to buy books (you know I have books for sale, right? You should check them out!) See? Always be pitching, right?

WE LOVE READER REVIEWS! THE DEVIL'S DUE NABS A NEW 3 STAR REVIEW!

WE LOVE READER REVIEWS! A big thank you to J. Marts for his kind words and 3 STAR review of The Devil's Due anthology from Valhalla Books. The review is fairly long and contains some spoilers. Be advised. You can read the full review at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088P7HBPH and below.

"Mostly Good Stories but Awful Editing. One thing I love about this anthology is that, even though the stories involve making deals with demons and/or the Devil, they don’t glamourize it. Sure, it seems like some of the stories can have good endings or solutions, but they always backfire.
Working with evil ALWAYS backfires."

One thing that truly bothers me with the anthology, and it honestly made me drop a star in rating, is how this is edited. Some stories are better edited than others, but you’d think with TWO editors, there would be a lot more consistency. Formatting isn’t consistent (like paragraphs will either be shoved together or quite a bit farther apart), there is sometimes colored font where there shouldn’t be, and there are a lot of grammatical and/or spelling errors in some of the stories. I’m appalled by it. What the heck did these editors even do?

“The Resurrection and the Life” - An interesting historical piece about a physician named Alec Duffy whose sister is ended up being murdered. He finds that the [Hippocratic] oath can’t always be followed...especially when one seems to have a demoness on their side. (3.75/5)

“The Black Rock” - This is also interesting and shows that you can’t just give evil away; someone has to be willing to take it...even if they don’t recognize the evil. Desperation is a real downfall. This is one that kind of had stilted writing (this was an author thing, not an editor one). (3/5)

“Genevieve and the Owl” - This was a weird twist on Cinderella (3.5/5)

“Saddie’s Choice” - OK but why did the editors not spell the title correctly?! This is a longer story on how running away from a contract gets you nowhere but dead and damned. I really liked some of the words on what it means to DIE vs. continue to live in the afterlife (4.5/5)

“Mary’s Story” - A historical piece on Mary Lincoln writing a letter about how she forced Abraham to sell his soul for “victory.” (2/5)

“Face It” - A too-short story (this would be much better fleshed out, no pun intended, but I hope Carol Gyzander does create a longer story from this in the future, for her sake) about how rash judgements can hurt more than help...and sometimes even repenting, if too late (and I’m not talking Confession), doesn’t prevent your fate. (3.5/5)

“The Plan” - Cops investigate a murder scene of a man who was well-liked at a local church. A former member knows better though, and exposes the demon within the other man. I loved the end with the man’s son is super awesome. (4/5)

“Identity Theft” - This is, by far, my favorite. It swaps between past and present extremely well. While I don’t like how the lead is an alcoholic, she found herself somehow damning herself without signing a contract, and has developed the ability to see beyond the veil if someone with a certain contract dies in front of her. There is actually hope there at the end, if she decides one day to fully say ‘no’ But there is a lot of teasing about the WRONG she has witnessed and, in a macabre way, I want to know what it is. (5/5)

“Dante’s Tenth” - Dante, Arizona is a booming town with a lot of new people searching for silver. A reporter falls for a beautiful girl who seduces him after one day and then shows him what she really is. Amidst the demon stories, a vampire one threw me off, but it wasn’t bad, just...pretty abrupt and fast-paced. (4/5)

“The Devil You Know” - A fairly in-depth eerie story about how selfishness leads people to do awful things, like wishing for a child to be dead in lieu of her parents. We are not meant to like the main character, and I like that his behavior is pointed out by multiple people. And he is still not repentant. (4.5/5)

“Here Comes Mr. Herribone” - Super weird story about a costumed head actually being a creature of its own. (3/5)

“Good Samuel Rittan” - This is super short and disturbing. (1/5)

“The Known and True Story of the Djin” - This is one of the worst edited, to where it doesn’t even seem like the author edited their own work (for example, “majesty” is spelled “magesty” TWICE). The story has potential but then the writing felt insanely rushed and--even with the magic--a lot of things happened that felt forced and irrational. There is some neat history to the story’s events but even that didn’t capture me enough. (3/5)"

Thanks again, J. Marts.

WE LOVE READER REVIEWS! THE DEVIL'S DUE GETS 5 STARS ON GOODREADS!

WE LOVE READER REVIEWS! Big thanks to Darrell Grizzle for his kind words and 5 STAR GoodReads review for The Devil's Due anthology from Valhalla Books. You can read the full review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/3625671672

"The Devil’s Due is an “unlucky 13” stories about people who make Faustian bargains (sometimes unwittingly) with the devil or one of his infernal agents. It’s a familiar literary trope, but the authors in this anthology breathe new life into it, sometimes by recasting a story in an unexpected setting. Bobby Nash’s story “Dante’s Teeth” is set in the Old West, and it’s an excellent Western as well as a horror story. “Genevieve and the Owl” by Mark Allan Gunnells takes the form of a dark fairy tale, and as a lover of folk horror I found the story fascinating. “Mary’s Secret” by Winfield Strock III (an author who is new to me) gives us a story of Victorian-era spiritualism and a historical setting in the form of a secret letter written by Mary Todd Lincoln in 1882. And one of my favorite horror themes, the cursed book, ends the anthology with Adam Messer’s “The Known and True History of the Djin.” Highly recommended for all lovers of horror literature."

Thanks again, Darrell. I'm glad you liked it.

WE LOVE READER REVIEWS - THE DEVIL'S DUE NABS ANOTHER 5 STAR REVIEW!

We Love Reader Reviews! Big thanks to Stephanie Schwartz for her kind words and 5 STAR Amazon review of The Devil's Due from Valhalla Books.

"A very good horror anthology! I really enjoyed the stories I read in this anthology. They really did a great job capturing my interest and holding my attention and I especially enjoyed reading "Genevieve and the Owl" by Mark Allan Gunnells. It has a very sympathetic protagonist and in my humble opinion, sets up a perfectly creepy atmosphere in the woods although more horrifying is the protagonist's home life. The story on the whole was very satisfying and I highly recommend it. I also really enjoyed the first story "The Resurrection and the Life" which finds it's protagonist in a very desperate situation and one he won't be easily able to get out of. All in all, if you enjoy stories about making deals with the devil, than this is the anthology for you."

A HISTORIC TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE...

When I was in high school, there was a plan to restore the Kilgore Mill Covered Bridge, a historic covered bridge off Tanner's Bridge Road in our county. I was tasked with drawing a postcard that would be sold to raise money. It was an honor to be part of it and the bridge was restored to its original glory.

Sadly, the bridge burned down a short time later and was never rebuilt. I did a second drawing later. At one point, the postcards were in the local museum. That was cool. I assume they are still there. I
still have the original. Maybe I should donate it to them too.

Yesterday. I visited the bridge for the first time since high school. It's sad to see it as a burned out skeleton. The weird part was that I remember the river being wider. Funny how memory works, huh?

It was a nice trip down memory lane. I remember the excitement of being part of this movement to save the old bridge. It was especially thrilling to be asked to contribute the artwork for the postcards.
