EARTHSTRIKE AGENDA
A novel by Bobby Nash

Humanity has gone to the stars. Earth, once barren and decimated by war and the depletion of natural resources has been reborn.

Today, Scavengers prey on small mining towns and colonies. The United Planetary Alliance Marshal's Service seems unable to stop these raids. They are outmanned and outgunned, but is the only law on many colonies.

Newly promoted Captain, Virgina Harmon takes command of her first starship, the Pegasus, the latest ship built to solve the Scavenger problem. Plagued by nervousness over her first command Captain Harmon is rocked by the news of her mentor’s murder.  Just days before he was to report to her aboard the Pegasus as chief of engineering.

In Earth orbit, a science station becomes a target.  An enemy has a plan to use the Space Lab facility as a means to claiming Earth.

In deep space, the United Planetary Alliance city-ship Ulysis welcomes aboard a high-ranking officer with a special mission for the crew.  Those plotting against the Alliance are preparing to make their move and their first target is the Ulysis.

Meanwhile, in the deepest regions of space an enemy has returned.  An enemy seeking vengeance.

SAMARITAN
An ebook novella by Bobby Nash

Deep space.

The science ship Aquarius, under the command of Captain Jeremiah Rains has finally reached the end of its exploratory mission to the depths of uncharted space and is returning home to Earth.

Captain Rains and his skeleton military crew are tired and bored from the lack of adventure they expected to find out in the great beyond. The scientists, however, are extremely happy with their many discoveries.

When the ship comes upon the wreckage of a destroyed space vessel, the crew is surprised to find one survivor; a woman, quite possibly the most beautiful woman any of them have ever seen. Her name is Lari and all she wants is someone, some Good Samaritan, to take her home.

The catch: her planet is located at the center of a black hole.

HALLOWEEN IN THE FASTER LANE!

I have a confession to make. I don't generally celebrate Halloween. Whew. I feel so much better after getting that off my chest. I have friends who go all out for Halloween and I do enjoy watching their efforts and I do enjoy seeing folks in costume. I used to Trick or Treat as a kid, but once I became an adult I just sort of stopped doing much for the holiday. I don't care for wearing costumes myself, which might be part of it. Regardless, I'm around cosplayers all year long at various conventions and appearances so costumes are just the norm for me. Oh well.

Anyway, once upon a time, many moons ago, I used to write and draw the Life In The Faster Lane comic strip for a local newspaper and then later for the internet. It's been awhile since I updated it, but you can check out some of the strips at http://fasterlane.blogspot.com. These strips were based on my family and I had fun doing them. It's been a number of years since I've drawn any strips though. Maybe I'll revisit the characters in the future.

For your Halloween pleasure, here are some of the Halloween-themed Life In The Faster Lane strips.

Enjoy.

OH, BABYLON!

Today was a very hectic day. And not in a good way. Sadly, that means I didn’t accomplish any writing at all.

On the upside, I did get to interview actress/writer Claudia Christian, whose work I enjoy, about her upcoming memoir, Babylon Confidential for the Earth Station One podcast tonight. Claudia was a great guest and a lot of fun to chat with. I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy of the book and it is a very good and frank read about life in Hollywood and her battles with alcoholism. She doesn't pull any punches. The interview will air as part of next week’s ESO episode at www.esopodcast.com. I'll post a link here when it goes live.

Hopefully, tomorrow will be more productive on the writing front.

HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD!

Domino Lady books featuring stories by Bobby Nash.
I'm spending the day helping the Domino Lady catch an assassin in 1930's Hollywood. How cool is that?

Without giving away too much of the plot, Domino Lady is hot on the trail of an assassin who killed popular gubernatorial candidate Douglas Hart. In addition to being a good man with a positive plan for the future of the great state of California, Hart was also the current paramour of the Domino Lady's alter ego, Ellen Patrick.

I haven't come up with a title yet, but this story is for Moonstone's new thriller line of novels and I'm excited to be telling a Domino Lady story in this format. She is such a cool character. Here's a taste of the story in progress.

The Domino Lady burst through the door at full speed.

Vaulting across the three steps that led to the roof’s rock-covered surface, she somehow managed to keep her balance as she sprinted across the roof in a pair of stunningly expensive high heels. She contemplated taking off the shoes, but quickly dismissed the idea as a bad one not only because the rough gravel strewn across the roof would have cut the bottoms of her feet to ribbons, but also because she loved the shoes and didn’t want to chance losing them. The perfect pair of shoes was just important to the Domino Lady persona as the slinky dress, cloak, and black domino mask from which she drew her crime-fighting moniker.

Years of living the life of socialite Ellen Patrick had imparted on her many impressive skills that had come in handy in her line of work, but at that moment the most important of those was the ability to run in heels.

She didn’t have to look back to know that they were after her. The two burly thugs who were chasing her were making no attempt at stealth. Like the proverbial bull in the china shop, they were making enough noise for the Domino Lady to know exactly where they were without turning to look. The bad news was that they were gaining fast.

If you're not familiar with Domino Lady, you can check out some of her adventures I've penned in the short prose (Domino Lady: Sex as a Weapon anthology) and comic book tabs (Domino Lady Vs. Mummy - co-written with Nancy Holder) above. Coming soon is Domino Lady & Sherlock Holmes (also co-written with Nancy Holder).

Have I mentioned lately how much I love this job?

KILLER GOOD READS...

With Facebook and Google+ having added "cover photos" to the profiles I've been playing around with some different ideas to showcase my work in that space. The size and shape adds to the challenge, certainly, but luckily for me, I enjoy a good challenge. These are fun. I'll definitely do more.

Here are some of the ones I've created.

What do you think? Which ones work best?

Facebook covers part of the cover image on the left with the profile photo. Google+ is the opposite, with the photo on the right. So, that means two of each image containing type.

UPDATE:
After posting these I went back and did some more. It's like an addiction, I tell ya.

ARE YOU READY FOR LITTLE LAMB AND BLACK SHEEP?

Not your typical crime fighters.
I was talking on the phone with my friend, Jeff Austin earlier today. I mentioned how much I’m enjoying the older art Jeff has been digging out of mothballs and posting on his blog and that got us talking about some of our old projects together.

That brought me back to Little Lamb and Black Sheep.

Little Lamb and Black Sheep were comic book characters that Jeff and I created way back when (some time in the early 90's I’d guess) with the dream of taking them to series. Little Lamb and Black Sheep was an interesting experiment. The characters in the stories, both good guys and bad guys were taken out of Jeff’s various sketchbooks. We found images we liked and gave those characters life. It worked pretty well for us too. It also allowed us to create characters that were a little different from the types of characters we might create on our own.

My favorite panel from the 1st comic script. Sad this never got finished.
I actually wrote several all-ages comic book scripts featuring the duo, but sadly only part of the first one was drawn before other projects pulled Jeff away from this project and we never seemed to get back to it. I probably have copies of those pages in a box somewhere. Maybe I’ll run across them one day. Anyway, I later wrote this short story to appear in Odyssey Magazine and Jeff added some spot illustrations to it. I miss Little Lamb and Black Sheep. They were a lot of fun to write.

I thought you might enjoy this peek at the Little Lamb and Black Sheep short story. It will be added to the Free Stories tab above for future visitors to find and hopefully enjoy.

Bobby

LITTLE LAMB & BLACK SHEEP OVERVIEW

Bethany Talbot and her uncle, Clarence (Blacky) Talbot make up the duo known as Little Lamb & Black Sheep.  Together with the brilliant inventor Herbert Talbot III, Bethany’s father and Blacky’s brother, they solve crimes.

Clarence Talbot was a top notch fighter pilot in his youth.  He was part of a select group who were experimented on for a special mission in outer space long before Sputnik was launched.  The mission was a failure, but there was an unexpected side effect.  Those involved aged very slowly and they began showing signs of blossoming super powers.  Thus, the world’s first super heroes were born.

Now, there are fewer and fewer of these heroes around as they are starting to age and find themselves tired of the constant battles and mind games.  Blacky agrees to train and watch after his niece when she devotes her life to the goal he and her father both fought for.  Although she has no super powers of her own, Herbert has created a way for Bethany to use hypnosis as a weapon.  With only the sound of her voice, Bethany can hypnotize many people.  This is how she keeps her face out of the spotlight, since she wears no mask.  The newspapers have even gone so far as to assume the vigilante called Little Lamb is a man.

There are those few who are immune, of course.

WHAT’S MY (FIRST) LINE?

I saw a couple of authors post the first lines from their stories today on Facebook and I thought it was an interesting idea so, not one to let a good idea go to waste, copied the idea with the first lines from some of my prose work. It was an interesting experiment, I must admit. I’m not sure what it tells you about my work, other than that I usually start my stories with a short sentence, but I found it an interesting peek behind my thought processes when it comes to opening lines. I’m sure my short first lines is a result of writing so many pulpy action/adventure stories, but I like it when stories hit the ground running and I think that shows in these first lines.

I kept the list to published prose. There were a lot of interesting lines that I couldn’t share yet because the books haven’t been released yet. Perhaps I’ll update this list down the road.

So, without further ado, and in no particular order (because I was too lazy to do that), here’s a list of the first lines of my prose stories. Enjoy.

EVIL WAYS
“FBI! Do! Not! Move!”

EARTHSTRIKE AGENDA
Axapta Three was little more than a barren rock.

FANTASTIX: CODE RED
Where were you when it happened?

DEADLY GAMES!
Francis Chalmers moved quickly down the corridor.

WITH EVIL INTENT

LANCE STAR: SKY RANGER “Homefront”
This is too easy.

LANCE STAR: SKY RANGER “Open Range”
Archibald Davis ached all over.

RAVENWOOD: STEPSON OF MYSTERY “Jazz”
Even from a distance the music was mesmerizing.

THE RUBY FILES “The Case Of The Wayward Brother”
Richard Ruby was having one of those days.

DOMINO LADY “Target: Domino Lady”
Jimmy Dugan had big dreams.

SECRET AGENT X “Mountain Men Of The Lost Valley”
Alexander Lienen sidestepped a hail of bullets.

FULL THROTTLE SPACE TALES: SPACE SIRENS “Just Another Saturday On Outpost Nine”
Erin Moonshadow felt the cold shroud of apprehension when she woke Monday morning.

SAMARITAN
“Contact!”

SENTINELS: ALTERNATE VISIONS “The Road To Hell...”
Karl Koenig was having a bad day.

BLACKTHORN: THUNDER ON MARS “The Minefields Of Malador!”
It happened all at once.

A FISTFUL OF LEGENDS “Shadows on the Horizon”
Doc Brand felt the rocks bite into his knees as he hit the ground.

TALES OF THE ROOK “Where There’s Smoke...”
The Rook walked into the trap.

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF THE EAGLE “Lights! Camera! Sabotage!”
He moved under cover of darkness.

GOLDEN AGE GOOD GIRLS: MOON GIRL “Blood Moon”
The fire burned brightly.

GREEN HORNET CASEFILES “A Thing of Beauty”
“Do we have an agreement?”

THE GREEN HORNET: STILL AT LARGE “The Gauntlet”
“Anyone here?”

Okay, okay, you convinced me. Here’s a sneak peek at the first line of the upcoming novel, Evil Intent. Don’t say I never did anything for you.

EVIL INTENT!
“We interrupt this program for an important announcement.”

And there you have it. If any of these first lines make you at all curious about the stories, please click on the novel or short story links above and feel free to pick up some books (if you’ll forgive the shameless self promotion).

Let’s hear from you. What do you like to see in the first line of a story or novel?

Happy reading.

SO I’VE BEEN THINKING...

Always scary, I know, but lately I’ve been spending a lot of time contemplating my writing career and evaluating why it’s not where I want it to be and how to get it to where I need it to be. I don’t have those answers yet, but some changes definitely have to be made to help me get to where I want to be because I'm just not where I want to be career wise. I have to figure out how to get there.

The problem is, I don't know how to get there yet. I still have to figure that part out. It's not just about getting stories completed and out there to be read. I have books out and some coming soon. This is more about me and where I want me to end up.

As I see it, success is a tricky beast. Success is measured differently by different people. For some, success is being published. For others it’s making a living from your writing. For others it’s hitting the New York Times Bestseller list. Whatever success is for you, it might be something completely different for someone else. I know what success is for me and I've not achieved it. Not even close. My next step is figuring out what will help me reach my goals.

And I do have goals. Although I haven't reached that goal yet, I know which direction I want my career to go. Sales are a portion of that certainly, because, hey, money's important and I like to eat so selling books is an important part of my job. Could sales be better? Oh, you bet. Deadly Games! and Earthstrike Agenda were great experiments for me and they’ve been met with mostly positive results by those who have read them, but they are far from selling like I hoped they would. Such is the nature of being a small press like BEN Books.

I have to be better about picking and scheduling what I work on to help me reach that goal. Don’t get me wrong, I'm proud of everything I've accomplished. I smile every time I look at the shelf of books that contain my work. There are novels, short stories, comic books, and graphic novels there. There are thrillers, sci fi, pulp, humor, and superheroes there too. I’ve been very blessed to work on such a diverse range of genres. I’ve done okay, but I'm not the success I want to be.

At least not yet.

I appreciate the comments I’ve received on this topic today on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. It’s gratifying to hear kind words from everyone. I appreciate it more than I can say.

So, why am I telling you this, you might be wondering.

Creative people, whether they be writers, artists, musicians, actors, or whatever, at one point in their career (if not more) have these same thoughts creep up on them. We’ll each handle it differently, of course. I'm simply looking forward to the future of my writing career and deciding what I need to do to get where I want to be. I'm not depressed. I'm not thinking of tossing in the towel. I'm just thinking and sometimes you just have to say things out loud (or type them that way in this case) to really hear your own thoughts. Change is not a bad thing.

I'm excited to see what the future brings.

On another note, I need a vacation. Yeah. That's the ticket. A vacation. HA! HA!

It’s been a crazy day here at Nash Central, which means that, even though I’ve been on the go non-stop all day, I’ve not accomplished much on the writing front. I’d best get to work. These stories are not going to write themselves.

Deadlines wait for no man.
