THE WRAP UP-- CONCAROLINAS

I was a guest at ConCarolinas in Charlotte, NC this past weekend, June 1 - 3. A literary con, CC brings in fans of books, sci-fi, and fantasy primarily, but I usually do well pushing my books there as well. I arrived Friday evening and set up and did a panel, hung out with some folks, then turned in, ready for a big Saturday. Saturday did not disappoint, although it deep seem to be a smaller crowd than normal. I was on several panels, all of which were a lot of fun. Due to an unforeseen personal issue, I had to leave Saturday night so I missed Sunday at the con.

Due to all of that, I didn't have time to take many photos. Sorry.

Here was my panel schedule:

FRIDAY, JUNE 1
Superheroes have been popular for decades, but society changes and our heroes need to, as well. What do we want from our superheroes now, that might be different from decades ago? How can superhero writers create characters that reflect the diversity of the population? This was a lot of fun. We talked super-heroes from the movies, TV, and comics. Lots of laughs.

SATURDAY, JUNE 2
Come watch our writing teams collaborate on a character and topic the audience throws at them. This type of panel is always a crowd-pleaser. Always fun. The panelists and audience crafted a time travel story from scratch.

The novella fell out of fashion several years back, but is now making a comeback in this time of e-readers and digital publication. Let's explore the benefits and costs off novella writing, and why it is an option novelists should consider. A great discussion on the good, the bad, and the ugly of writing, producing, and reading novellas. There was a lot of good information shared on this one.

How fast do you NEED to release books to make a living? Once upon a time it took years for books to be released, but these days, readers are demanding we write as fast as they can consume. Our panel talks about whether or not you need to release a book every fifteen minutes to make money. This one had my name written all over it. Another great panel on the craft of writing and writer's output.

4:30 pm - Author Reading with Bobby Nash No one actually came for my reading, but I met a nice lady and we talked about writing for 30 minutes so that was good too.

9:00 pm - Off With Her Head!
There’s no way around it – sometimes a character has to die. Should you use poison, a blade, fire? What’s the surest method? How long will it take for him to die? Let’s talk about the nitty-gritty of killing off characters. Because I had to leave early, I missed this panel, which is a shame because I was really looking forward to it.

Thanks for another great year, ConCarolinas.

CONCAROLINAS DAY 1

Day 1 of ConCarolinas 2018 is in the books. I capped the day with a fun panel at 9 pm called "Super-heroes in the Modern Age" along with an amazing group of writers, Samantha Bryant, Nicholas Olivo, Drew Hayes (our moderator who kept us on topic, a super-power unto itself), and me. Now back in the hotel room to get in a little work before crashing as I get ready for ConCarolinas Day 2. If you're in the Charlotte, NC area, please stop by and say hello.

The Lo' There Shall Come A Con Tour 2017! adds a new stop. Join me at ConCarolinas June 2 - 4 in Charlotte, NC. This will be my first time back at ConCarolinas as a guest in 5 or 6 years, although I have popped in a couple of times when I wasn't a guest to visit with some friends.

ConCarolinas is a general multi-genre multi-media convention. We call ourselves a sci-fi convention but in truth we cover all speculative fiction – science fiction, fantasy and horror. We host a variety of fandom related events and guests, including gaming, discussion panels, costume events, music events like SciFi Karaoke, concerts, a charity auction, a short film festival, SCA events, groups celebrating fandoms like Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who and many more. We have a Dealer Room with vendors selling unique fandom related items. At ConCarolinas you will find something for everyone!

CONCAROLINAS/MARIETTA COMIC AND ANIME CON WRAP UP

My book display on Sunday.
This past weekend was a blur of activity as I visited not one, but two conventions. I know, crazy, right? Together with my Earth Station One podcast co-host, Mike Gordon, I hit the road on Saturday for ConCarolinas in Charlotte, NC. A literary heavy con, this hotel-based show features some great authors. I was only on hand a few hours so I didn’t have a table set up. I ran into some great friends and even met some new folks as well. It was a fun time.

Here are a couple of photos. We were only there a short time and I was so busy talking I didn’t take many. I’ve got to start being better about remembering to snap some pics. As always, click ont he photos for a larger view.

The hall of authors. Or Author Row. I love this part of the con.

An awesome Batmobile replica and Ecto-1.
After the con, we stopped by some comic shops on the return trip to Georgia. Sadly, we missed a couple that were closed by the time we got to them. We’ll have to swing by for another visit next time.

On Sunday, Mike and I added another ESO host as Mike Faber joined us for the Marietta Comic/Anime Con in Marietta, GA. This was the first time for this particular con, although Mario Russo, the con organizer, has done other shows in McDonough and Warner Robbins. I did have a table at this con. There was a great crowd and I caught up with some familiar faces and met several new folks there as well. Even the late afternoon rain storm didn’t cool, off the con. I had a great time and thought there were some cool costumes on hand as well as some great guests that included writers, artists, publishers, podcasters, and zombies from The Walking Dead.

Some of the photos here are provided by Mark Shafer, Melodie Goodwin (who came out despite just having had a tonsilectomy - feel better soon), and MJDonline. Thanks so much for the photos. I often forget to get photos of myself behind the table.

This is what my table looks like from where I'm standing.

Bane

Avengers Assemble

Captain Cold has come in from the heat outside.

You never forget your first Forbush man!

Very cool look.

Zombies ont he left, June Brigman drawing on the right.

She was just too adorable.

I smell a smackdown brewing.

Another nice duo.

Loved their costumes. Great job.

I know that guy.
Both shows were a blast. If you’ve not had the opportunity to check out either show, you should give them a look next time. I think you’ll have a good time.

Next week I’m off to Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC on Saturday, June 8th. The following week I will be in Nashville, TN for Hypericon.

If you’re at either show, please stop by and say hello.
