AN EVIL INTENT EXCERPT...

Author Jeremy Hicks tagged me in a status and now i have to post 7 lines after the 7th line on page 7 from my current work in progress "Evil Intent" Okay, I'll play. Here's mine:

The brave men and women Donnie Lehmann had fought shoulder to shoulder with in the hot desert sands of countries that he wished he couldn’t find on a map had died for freedom and liberty and here they were just handing it away to evil men with evil agendas. Donnie Lehmann saw all of it happening and wanted to help. He loved his country and wanted to keep it safe.

There was a quote he had learned once. “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” He couldn’t remember who had said it, especially in his current state, but the words rang true.

Donnie Lehmann saw the evil happening to the country he loved.

And he would do something about it.

###

And the rules that got us here:

Go to page 7 or 77 in your current WIP.
Go to line 7
Post on your facebook page/blog the next 7 sentences or 7 lines—as they are!
Tag 7 people to do the same.

This was a fun little experiment.
I hope you enjoyed the excerpt.

Of course, I can't let you get out of here without reminding you that Evil Ways is still on sale. Get yours today!

EVIL'S COMING! DON'T LOOK BACK!

Please enjoy this excerpt from Evil Ways, a mystery/suspense/thriller by Bobby Nash. Learn more about Evil Ways here.

Evil Ways
A novel of fear and suspense
By Bobby Nash

“FBI! Do! Not! Move!”

Tensing beneath the loose tan coveralls, Jeff Davies knew his time was up. Slowly, oh so very slowly, he straightened to his full five feet eleven inches, arms cautiously rising. He knew the drill. He kept his hands open so the man behind him with the gun would see that he was unarmed.

Jeff Davies hated guns. Never touched the damned things. No good had ever come from them. His younger brother had died at age twelve because an angry, unpopular kid decided he’d had enough and carried his policeman father’s service revolver to school one morning. Young Pete Davies was murdered because some thirteen-year-old would-be-assassin was too nervous to shoot straight.

“Interlock your fingers behind your head.”

Jeff did as he was told. Not that he needed much instruction. This was not his first time on the wrong end of the law. Doubtless, it would not be his last. He knew the drill all too well.

“Take two steps back.”

Of course, Jeff complied with the lawman’s instructions. He moved slowly, careful not to give the agent any just cause to pull the trigger. In his mind a voice screamed, No sudden moves. No sudden moves.

No.

Sudden.

Moves.

“Get on your knees and cross your legs at the ankle.”

“S…sure,” Jeff stuttered.

He couldn’t believe how nervous he was. He wasn’t sure which was worse: having a Federal Agent behind him with a gun pointed at his head or staring at the timer slowly counting down to zero on the bomb in front of him.

Regardless, Jeff Davies was having a bad day, but he felt confident that the cause was worth it. He believed in the righteousness of his actions. He believed in the cause. By taking his time now, keeping the unsuspecting agent occupied, the others could get away. It was a sacrifice he was willing to make for his friends.

Someone grabbed his arms, jerked them roughly behind his back and Jeff felt the cool familiar metal of handcuffs against his skin and  heard the audible clicks of the locks as if they moved in slow motion.

“Make sure you read him his rights,” the agent said. Jeff had yet to catch a glimpse of the man who caught him. “Then evacuate this area,” he heard him say as he was forced to his feet.

“Yes sir, Agent Palmer. You heard the man, people,” another agent yelled to his cohorts as they pulled Jeff Davies around and rushed him away from the bomb he had planted. He knew there was no time for the bomb squad to arrive. There was nothing the FBI could do. The Treasury Building was about to become one very large pile of rubble.

The last thing Davies saw before being whisked away was the timer reach two minutes.

Counting down.

# # #

“What do you think, Harold?”

FBI Special Agent Harold Palmer stood next to his friend,  Special Agent in Charge of the Joint Terrorism
Task Force Carter Reidling. Harold and Carter had been friends for a long time, partners even longer.
Harold was still getting used to Carter being in charge.

“I think we should be anywhere but here,” Harold deadpanned.

“Funny.”

“I think you should get out of here, Carter.”

“We’ve got a minute.”

Harold pointed to the timer with red numbers counting down. “Fifty-two seconds, actually,” Harold said as he knelt down in front of the bomb. “I don’t think either of us can run that fast any more.”

“Can you diffuse it?”

“Diffuse it?” Harold snorted. “Hell, I shouldn’t even touch it. There’s enough C-4 here to level the building, the parking lot, and about a mile stretch of the highway in either direction.”

“Okay. That’s bad,” Carter said quietly.

As usual, his odd knack for witty dialogue at the wrong moment was in typical form. Harold assumed his friend had seen one too many action movies and was scarred for life by them. Maybe he could arrest Jerry Bruckheimer for corrupting his friend’s common sense.

“Bad is an understatement,” Harold said as he prodded the explosive trigger, pulling it free of the block of the explosive silly putty. “C-4’s out.”

“Okay.”

“Gimme a second, Carter.” Harold said. He used a small pair of needle nose pliers to get inside the small
device, careful not to disturb the twin vials of liquid inside. “If these two liquids mix, KA-BOOM.”

Carter flinched slightly, tried to cover it and hoped his friend had not seen the slip in his action hero composure.

“Timer’s reset. We’re back to three minutes,” Harold announced.

“Remind me to give you a raise,” Carter said after letting out the breath he’d been holding. This was not their first run in with explosives so Carter was taking it seriously. Well, as seriously as Carter took anything.

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, boss,” Harold said, standing up slowly. He lifted the explosive device gently, careful not to rattle any of the overly sensitive parts bombs usually had. “There’s still enough explosive in this to do some damage. Maybe take out a floor or twelve.”

“What do you need?”

“Bomb squad would be nice.”

“But you’ll settle for…?”

“Clear me a route out of the building for starters. I think I remember seeing something useful out there,”

Harold said as he walked briskly down the corridor. “And we--”

The two liquids started mixing.

“--better hurry!”

Harold, running now, bolted through the open double doors at the building’s rear. Two agents were holding them open for him.

He shouted to them as he passed. “Take cover!”

Now what? Come on, Palmer. Think. Think.

Then he saw it. Right where he remembered.

Bingo!

The garbage truck was sitting at the end of the cul-de-sac at the building’s rear. The driver had parked it and was standing with the gaping onlookers who were being kept out of the way by Washington D.C.’s finest.

Harold tossed the bomb in the back and pushed the button to compact the garbage.

“Get these people…”

“Back!” was the word Harold was going to say, but  was replaced by the loud explosion inside the two-ton
garbage truck. The blast lifted the truck ever so slightly, sending it toppling over onto its side, which only added to the noise as the truck’s side impacted the concrete.

Harold lay on the ground nearby, face down, arms over his head.

Somewhere close by, someone screamed his name. Probably Carter, but who could tell with all those damned bells and whistles going off all around him. Everything was kind of fuzzy, like he was inside a barrel stuffed with cotton gauze. For a second he couldn’t remember where he was.

Then Carter was there, shaking him. Asking him something, but it was so hard to understand. “Did it work?”
Harold asked. At least that’s what he thought he said. “Truck work?”

“Yes,” his friend nodded. Harold wasn’t positive, but he could’ve sworn Carter called him a luck son of a fish. Later he’d realize he just heard it wrong.

An hour later after being thoroughly worked over by EMS, Harold and Carter stood beside the ambulance parked next to the overturned garbage truck. “I can’t believe that worked,” Carter said as the paramedic finished his work up on Agent Palmer, but he doubted Harold was paying much attention to anything except staring at the overturned wreck.

“Is he going to be okay?” Carter asked the medic.

The paramedic, a woman named Sanchez, shrugged. “He suffered a mild concussion which is not surprising considering the size of and his proximity to the explosion.” Carter’s face must have betrayed his concern.
“Don’t worry, sir. It’s not as serious as it sounds. The ringing in his ears will fade in a few days. After that, he should have a physician check him over to make sure there’s no permanent damage to his hearing, but he should make a full recovery.”

“Thank you,” Carter said as he pulled a business card from his badge wallet and handed it over to the medic.

“Make sure a copy of the report is forwarded to my office, please.”

“Not a problem, Agent… Reidling,” Sanchez said, reading the name off the card. “Does he need a ride home?”

“That’s okay,” Carter waved her off. “I’ll make sure he gets there. Thanks again.”

Walking over to the truck, Carter stepped up next to his friend. “I can’t believe that worked,” he said again.

This time Harold heard him. “Yeah. I was surprised too,” he commented.

Carter gently slapped his friend on the arm. “You know what I think?”

“I shudder to guess.”

“I think someone has seen one too many action movies.”

“Oh, ha, ha. Very funny.”

“I’m also thinking,” Carter said as they turned and left the garbage truck behind, “maybe you need a nice little vacation.”

“You’ll get no argument from me.”

“That,” Carter deadpanned, “would be a pleasant surprise.”

EVIL WAYS
A novel by Bobby Nash

Evil’s coming...
Don’t look back!

BEN Books is pleased to announce that the re-release version of author Bobby Nash’s debut novel, EVIL WAYS is now available for purchase in paperback and ebook formats.

Originally released in 2005 as a paperback (followed by a limited hardcover edition a few years later), Evil Ways was the first published novel for author Bobby Nash. “There was a feeling of joy I just can’t explain,” said Nash of holding those initial copies of his first published novel back in September of 2005. “I was so excited. I smiled for a week. It was thrilling,” adds Nash. “With this re-release, I’m excited to get the book back in the hands of readers. Even more exciting is launching Evil Ways as an ebook for the first time.”

As for the future of the characters, Nash announced that the second book in the Harold Palmer Thriller Series, titled Evil Intent, is underway for a 2014 release. “From there, hopefully we get to do a book three, then four, and so on,” Nash added, smiling at the prospect of seeing his characters continue. “With both The Harold Palmer Thrillers and The John Bartlett/Benjamin West Thrillers (Book 1: Deadly Games! is available now), not to mention my other writing projects, it looks like I’ve got a lot of writing ahead of me.”

EVIL INTENT'S PAGE 77 EXCERPT

Thanks to Derrick Ferguson for sending this along on Facebook. It was fun so I played along and posted it to my Facebook page and Fan Page. Thought I'd post it here as well.

Bobby

A bit of fun for writers: Go to either page 7 or 77 of your manuscript. Count down 7 lines, then copy the next 7 lines to your status. (We'll call these "sentences.")

Here’s mine.

From Evil Intent:
The biggest concentration of pain was his head. Mostly, this was a result of taking the stocky end of a rifle to the face, but he couldn’t discount that the men arguing nearby were adding to the pain. He was ready to take another hit to the face if it would make them tone it down a little. The medic treating him, a young agent named Amy Lake was taping a bandage to the side of Harold’s head where blood had been pouring only minutes earlier. Between the handful of Ibuprofen and the shot of Lydocain she had given him to deaden the pain, he wasn’t in as much discomfort as before, but he was still a bit off balance. Thankfully, the ground had stopped spinning back and forth like some kind of weird carnival ride so he was able to stand up.

WITH EVIL INTENT--

Despite a day filled with interruptions, I managed to add a little over 2,500 words to my Evil Intent novel, which is pretty cool. I plan to add another good chuck tomorrow.

Here's a sneak peek from the novel. Bear in mind that this is a first draft and could very well change before going to print.

###

Harold Palmer was tired.

The handful of Advil he’d taken had helped with the pounding in his head, but hadn’t completely knocked it out, which was to be expected. He’d taken a blow to the head less than a day earlier and was still reeling from that, then coupling it with very little sleep and he was surprised he was still able to stay upright, much less function.

Apparently, Carter noticed this as well. “Why don’t you go home and get some rest,” he told Harold. “I’ll call you as soon as I find out anything.”

“I’ll be okay,” Harold said, although neither of them really believed it. “Just didn’t get a lot of sleep last night.”

“Yeah, right,” Carter said.

Before he could offer a retort, Harold’s cell phone rang, his ring tone a generic funky tune that Beverly said always reminded her of a cheesy 70’s movie. He slipped the phone from its perch and saw that the call was from Ray. Normally, when he was at a crime scene, he would ignore a call from his brother and let it go to voicemail, but he didn’t feel like listening to a lecture from Carter so he answered it. “Not a great time, Ray,” he said softly. “Can I call you back?”

“Actually, I think this might be important, Harold” Franklin Ray Palmer’s voice said through the speaker.

That got his attention. Ray never called him Harold, especially if it was a private conversation. “Is something wrong?” Harold asked.

“Yeah,” Franklin said. “I’m flying solo here today. Myers and Dooley aren’t here and I really could use them.”

Harold snapped his fingers, which grabbed Carter’s attention.

Carter mouthed What’s going on?

“What’s going on, Ray?” Harold asked, making sure Carter could hear. He did and motioned for everyone in the cramped apartment to stop what they were doing and quiet down.

“Who’s there with you?”

“I’ve got an Agent Rogers from the ATF here in my office. He said he needed to get in touch with you.”

“Rogers? Brian Rogers?”

Suddenly, everyone in the room was listening to the conversation.

“Brian Rogers?” he asked, putting emphasis on the first name as he fished a sharpie from his pocket, pulled the cap off with his teeth, then spit it onto the countertop. There was no paper close at hand so he wrote directly on the pressed wood countertop.

“Yeah. That’s him,” Ray said.

Harold scribbled a note on the counter, Lehmann! At my brother’s office! Call Myers! Then he wrote a phone number down, thankful for his good memory.

Carter nodded and pulled out his own phone and dialed the number, walking across the room to talk without being overheard through Harold’s conversation.

“Is he listening in?” Harold asked.

“No,” Ray said calmly. “He’s in my office.”

“Okay. Stay calm.” He took a breath, tried to take his own advice. Panicking would not help Ray get out of this. “Listen. There’s no time to explain, but that’s not Brian Rogers."

Writing an action sequence tomorrow. I put the pieces in place today and finished up with gunfire being exchanged. Action is fun to write, but also tricky. You have to come up with interesting ways to explain the action and not repeat those same phrases again and again.

Oh, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Harold Palmer's first thriller, EVIL WAYS is still available in paperback and multiple ebook formats. Just click the NOVELS tab above for all the information.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope to have more excerpts soon.

THE FINE ART OF KICKIN’ BUTT!

Art: Rock Baker/Jeff Austin

Art: Rock Baker/Jeff Austin
I’m working on the Domino Lady novel tonight. I’ve posted a small taste below. This is just first draft so it might change before all is said and done. Fight scenes are fun. The real trick is making it sound interesting and still flow quickly like a real fight.

#

“Have you ever considered that I might have you right where I want you?” Domino Lady asked.

“And where is that?”

“Close enough to touch,” Domino Lady said. Before he even registered the move, she spun and lanced out with a spinning kick that caught [SPOILER] squarely on the side of the head, knocking him off balance. She followed the spin with a judo blow to the wrist that relieved the man of the shiny .45 he was so proud of. Then, Domino Lady brought her elbow around and connected with the same side of his face she’d just kicked, smiling at the satisfying crack of the impact. That one had cost him some teeth.

#

So? Choreographing a fight scene is a bit tricky at times. I’m twisting around and reenacting the fight to make sure it all lines up and makes sense, which I’m sure is quite hilarious if anyone was to see me doing it. Yet another reason I don’t run a webcam. Scary.

I hope you have a great weekend. Me, I’ll be here working on finishing up the Domino Lady novel so I can get it off to the waiting hands of my editor, who has been more than patient with my schedule thanks to some other deadlines and projects that have crept up.

I’m having fun with this one. I think Domino Lady works well in a political thriller, but of course, as the above sample indicates, she’s still a butt-kickin’ pulp hero.

Moonstone also announced today that issue #1 (of 2) of the Domino Lady/Sherlock Holmes comic book is scheduled for April 2013. This two-part story is written by my friend and co-author, Nancy Holder. I worked on issue #2 with Nancy. I assume it will be out in May. I’ll keep you posted on that. The full story can be seen in the post directly below this one.

Domino Lady and I seem to be a good fit, which thrills me. I think she is a great character and I have fun writing her. In fact, I suspect I'll be doing at least one more novel with Domino Lady teaming up with another character, but that's still on the drawing board so fingers crossed. I think it could be a fun story though. Have to run it past my publisher.

Today was a fairly productive day of writing, considering I didn’t get started until early evening. Almost hit 2,000 words of fiction, but soared well above that with all the other writing-related work I did today. Those behind the scenes things are important even though they don’t always count toward finishing the story.

Time for a little TV to decompress before calling it a night.

Sweet dreams.

Bobby

PS: None of the art posted here is for the Domino Lady novel.

AN EVIL WAYS EXCERPT

It’s excerpt time. With BEN Books release of Evil Ways, I wanted to share the opening chapter from Evil Ways for your enjoyment (and to hopefully tease you into picking up the novel yourself - ain’t I a stinker?). The following excerpt is the opening chapter where we meet FBI Special Agent Harold Palmer for the first time. This sets up the story of Evil Ways, but also lays the groundwork for the upcoming Evil Intent novel, which will put Harold and Special Agent Carter Reidling on the trail of the mastermind behind the events in this excerpt.

Enjoy.

“FBI! Do! Not!

“What do you think, Harold?”

FBI Special Agent Harold Palmer stood next to his friend,  Special Agent in Charge of the Joint Terrorism Task Force Carter

Reidling.

He used a small pair of needle nose pliers to get inside the small device, careful not to disturb the twin vials of liquid inside.

I think I remember seeing something useful out there,” Harold said as he walked briskly down the corridor.

Back!” was the word Harold was going to say, but  was replaced by the loud explosion inside the two-ton garbage truck.

“Did it work?” Harold asked.
