A little fun with Photoshop...

I needed to come up with a quick ad for something yesterday after getting home from the convention so I put this together pretty fast. I think it works and am pretty happy with it. I may redo it with larger covers so I only use each once though.

And here it is without the covers. I can add new content as needed. I also think it works blank to symboloize the blank page writers stare at before they start writing.

After seeing these, my friend, Jeff Allen, did this parody of the ad. It made me laugh so I had to share it.

Had a fairly productive day. Did some work on my Lance Star: Sky Ranger story for volume 4 called "Ring of Fire" and also made quite a dent in my remodeling of the website. I added content to the Comic Books/Graphic Novels and Digital/eBooks tabs above. I also added a few things to the Prose Anthologies tab as well.

Long day though so I’m ready to call it a night.

R.I.P. Al Rio

It has been reported by Brazilian journalists that comic book artist Al Rio has recently died.

Known especially for his Gen 13 and DV8 work for Wildstorm, and more recently for his Zenescope covers, especially Grimm Fairy Tales. Al Rio had worked across the comics industry, both in Brazil and in the USA, including the likes of Grifter & The Mask, Alan Moore’s Voodoo, Avengylene for Avatar, World War Hulk, Amazing Spider-Man and New Mutants.

The respected Brazilian journalist Sidney Gusman, after talking to those close to the family reports that is was apparently suicide, but that no note had been left.

I did not know Al Rio personally, but I did have the honor of working with him on the first issue of Jungle Fantasy for Avatar Press several years ago. Al drew with such a beautiful line and his work was always visually exciting. And boy could he draw the most beautiful ladies.

My condolences to his family and to my friend, Terry Maltos, who is Al's friend and art dealer. Both the man and his talent will be missed.

A BURST OF CREATIVE ENERGY!

After a day of not accomplishing much thanks to a migraine coupled with throwing my back out I had a burst of creative inspiration that led to a late night writing session. It was great. I added a little over a thousand words to a story for the next Lance Star: Sky Ranger anthology for Airship 27. This one features a mysterious island, giant winged prehistoric creatures, an imminent volcanic eruption, and oh yeah, Nazis.

Here's a taste of the story.

    “I have no idea,” Lance said, scratching his head. “I do know one thing though. Whatever they’re up to, it can’t be good.”

    “Oh, I don’t know about that, Mr. Star,” a booming voice called out from the shadows.
    Each of them reaching for their side arms, Lance and Cy spun toward the sound. They weren’t fast enough. Instead, the pilots found themselves staring down the barrels of several automatic weapons pointed directly at them.
    A smiling Nazi officer strode from the shadows. He was dressed in full dress uniform, his medals shined to perfection. He walked with his hands positioned behind his back and carried himself with a regal bearing, not an uncommon characteristic of most of the German officers Lance Star had met in his life.
    “I am Major Wilhelm Adler, gentlemen,” he said. “And you are now my prisoners.”

After a short break to watch episode two of Sherlock season 2 I got back to work on a comic script. Three deadlines coming up in the next two weeks so there’s a lot to do.

I had a great day of writing and edits today. If all goes as planned, I'll finish this novella tomorrow. I'm just getting to the action-packed climax of the story, which is always fun to write. I'm enjoying the character of The Eagle and I'm excited to see the book in print from Pro Se Press as part of the Pulp Obscura line they're doing in conjunction with Altus Press. I've seen the cover and it is gorgeous.

I've got another novella (Lance Star: Sky Ranger for Airship 27), 2 comic scripts (can't divulge many details on these just yet, but 1 for Moonstone Books and 1 for New Legend Productions), and a novel (Domino Lady for Moonstone Books) on deck though. Plenty to keep me busy.

I also watched the first episode of Sherlock season 2. Good stuff.

A LITTLE NIGHT WRITING...

I had planned to write all day, but an interruption just minutes after I got started killed that plan. I finally got back in front of the computer tonight and was able to get in some decent writing time this evening. The words weren't flowing quite like I'd hoped, but I managed to turn out a little over 1,000 words on two different stories. Hopefully, they’re good words though.

JUSTIFIED!

Sinus pressure/headache sidelined me most of the day, but after re-recording the Earth Station One podcast version 2.0 (due to technical difficulties, which we'll go into when the episode goes live) I finally got some writing in.

After watching Justified, of course. What an incredible show. Some of the best writing on television at the moment, in my opinion. If you're not watching it, you should give it a shot. Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on FX (and they rerun it throughout the week). Seasons 1 & 2 are on DVD. 2 episodes have aired in Season 3.

Also picked up a comic book co-writing gig for a one shot issue tonight. I've known about it for awhile, but we're moving forward starting today.
Anyway, the clock is coming up quickly on 3:30 a.m. and my eyelids are starting to droop so I think it’s time to call it a night.

More writing tomorrow, however, as deadlines loom close.

I had an OK writing day on Sunday. Weorked on my story for The New Adventures of The Eagle. Didn't accomplish as much as I'd hoped, but made a nice dent.

Had to go help my Dad clean out (and by clean out, I mean rearrange) his garage this morning, but I'm back in the office and ready to roll. Many words need to be written before recording the Earth Station One podcast this evening.

I wrote a story for IDW's Zombies Vs. Robots prose line called "The Wall." My story is not in this first batch, but I wanted to share the information.

PRESS RELEASE:

IDW Publishing continues expanding its prose publishing activities with a two-month-long "e-singles" promotion featuring all-new stories set in the gleefully gory ZOMBIES VS. ROBOTS universe. The property was first published in 2006 as a two-issue mini-series from the creative team of artist Ashley Wood and writer/editor Chris Ryall. Helpless to resist ZVR's rowdy mix of clunky, wise-cracking robots trying to stem the zombie apocalypse (the fault of clumsy scientists), with the remnants of mankind caught in the middle. There have been multiple ZVR miniseries, and in 2010, Sony Pictures optioned the film rights for Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes production company.

Beginning on January 20, IDW will digitally release one new ZVR prose story each week for eight weeks.

"We're calling this our '8x8' plan," explains Jeff Conner, the IDW contributing editor responsible for the ZVR prose line. "Each week, from January 20 to March 9, we'll debut a new short story torn from the festering jaws of the shambling, clanking world that is ZOMBIES VS. ROBOTS. And these all-new tales will be a tasty $0.99 each—it's our New Year's gift to the brain-eating reading public."

"Pammi Shaw: Creator of Gods and Also Blogger" is the first 8x8 offering, and comes from the multi-talented actress/writer Brea Grant (Heroes, Dexter, Halloween II). Told via blog entries, her story extends the recent Zombies vs. Robots: Undercity comic book miniseries, which introduced readers to the young blogger from India, and ended with the members of an elite subterranean enclave underneath the Washington Monument being wiped out by ravenous zombies—or so we are led to believe.

"I wanted to put someone in one of the most difficult places possible by ripping away her community, family, and everything she knows, leaving her with her own thoughts," states Grant, whose writing credits include the IDW comics We Will Bury Youand Suicide Girls. "I wanted this person to deal with religion, love, gods and sanity all alone, separated from the raging violence outside. And who better to put in that position than a jaded, flippant teenage blogger named Pammi?"

"We're quite committed to e-singles," Conner noted. "They're such an effective way to present our scintillating shambling dead vs. gun-crazed warbot content. Going exclusively digital with 8x8 was, as we say around IDW, a no-brainer. For sure we'll be doing more digital-only promotions as the year unfolds."

Debuting weekly starting on January 20, 2012, the ZVR e-singles will be available on the Kindle, Nook and in iBooks. The full 8x8 schedule is:

UnderCity's lone survivor continues her blog and meets (creates?) a digital deity with its own ideas about fighting the zombie apocalypse.

Brea Grant is sometimes a writer (We Will Bury You; Suicide Girls), sometimes an actress (Heroes; Dexter; Halloween 2) and all-the-time a nice person. She is currently directing her first film.

Steve Rasnic Tem -- "To Denver (with Hiram Battling Zombies)" (1/27/12)
What happens when high-test chronic is tainted with potent zombie blood? Will it be a high to die for?

Multiple award-winning author Steve Rasnic Tem has published over 300 short stories in the areas of fantasy, science fiction, crime, and horror. His latest novel is Deadfall Hotel.

Nancy A. Collins -- "Angus: Zombie-Versus-Robot Fighter" (2/03/12)
A young man is trained by his scientist father to fight zombies, robot-style. What could go wrong?

Nick Mamatas -- "Throckmorton's Bad Day" (2/10/12)
Years before the zombie apocalypse, an enterprising and amoral young college student (later to become "Dr. Throckmorton in the ZVR comics) tests experimental street drugs on the local users. The results will have unforeseen consequences for his future self.

Nick Mamatas is the author of several unusual novels, including The Damned Highway with Brian Keene, and The Last Weekend. His short fiction has appeared in Asimov's SF, Long Island Noir and many other magazines and anthologies.

Amber Benson -- "Mademoiselle Consuela and Her Army of One" (2/17/12)

Amber Benson is an actor, filmmaker, novelist and amateur occultist who sings in the shower. Best known for her work as Tara Maclay on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, she is also the author of the Calliope Reaper-Jones series and the co-director (with Adam Busch) of the feature film, Drones.

Don Webb -- "The Wizards vs. the Bots" (2/24/12)
Can black magic control zombies? What about warbots?

Don Webb has 20 published books ranging from the nonfiction occult classic Uncle Setnakt's Nightbookto the best weird west book, Webb's Weird Wild West.

Kaaron Warren -- "The River of Memory" (3/02/12)
An Amazon goddess thinks she can restore humanity to zombies; a warbot has doubts.

Kaaron Warren is an award-winning horror and science-fiction writer based in Australia. She has two short story collections and three novels in print.

Lincoln Crisler — "Kettletop's Revisionary Plot" (3/09/12)
A distraught scientist travels back in time in a desperate attempt to save his wife and prevent the discovery of the deadly Z Virus.

Lincoln Crisler is author, editor and reviewer as well as an active-duty soldier in the United States Army. His books include Magick & Misery and Wild. He is the editor of the dark-superhero anthology Corrupts Absolutely? He has served as a contributing writer for The Horror Library and Shroud Magazine.

Analog media fans needn't worry that IDW's new ZVR stories will only be available in e-pub formats. "We aren't abandoning print in any way," confirms Conner. "From the beginning we designed the ZVR prose program to have distinct identities for print and digital. So while it's true that there will never be print incarnations of any of the 8x8 series themselves, we do have a full slate of ZVR collections and novellas in production on the print side; the '8x8' stories will appear there, just in different contexts."

The first print collection will be THIS MEANS WAR!, set to appear in March, 2012.

"PAMMI SHAW: Creator of Gods and Also Blogger" ($0.99, digital only) will be available on the Kindle, the Nook, in iBooks, and Kobo on January 20, 2012.

I was doing an interview today and one of the questions was how mnay stories I'd written. I didn't know the answer so I counted all comics, novels, and shorter pieces written for print (some not yet out, but completed and in the hands of editors/publishers).

I was surprised that the number came out to 83.

Wow. 83 different stories.

That surprised even me.

There's more to come.

I'm just getting started.

R.I.P. Howard Hopkins

Came home from the ESO podcast to some sad news. Howard Hopkins, a good friend of mine and an extremely talented writer has passed away. I have no words. Howard was a dear friend and this news shocks me greatly. He and his talents will sorely be missed. I know that Howard was incredibly excited by his upcoming projects and I hope you'll check his new books out when they become available.

A late night writing session turned into a long one. I wrote a little over 2,300 words on my story for Pulp Obscura’s The New Adventures of The Eagle anthology. I had a really fun idea for the set up and opening and I think it came together quite nicely.

I probably won't get as much writing accomplished tomorrow as I have a lunch meeting to discuss some exciting upcoming projects.

After that the Earth Station One crew is recording on location at Dr. No’s Comics in Marietta, GA. Should be a fun day. It’s all about the bad guys this week. Cover Design

I've been working ont he front cover design for the upcoming BEN Books release of my sci fi novel, EARTHSTRIKE AGENDA. I've finally come up with a cover I'm happy with so I wanted to share it here. I still have to design the back cover and do some design work on the inside as well. Plus, with writing deadlines pretty heavy at the moment it will be a few months before this one is ready. As soon as I have the back cover and back cover copy ready I will share that here as well.

Not The Cover

Finished my story for The Spider anthology in a late night writing session. I just couldn’t get my writing muscles working during the day today, but a couple thousand words tonight came in handy. My story is called "Fear The Dark" and it has been sent off to my editor at Moonstone Books.

Next up, I've got a story to do for The New Adventures of The Eagle for Pulp Obscura then back to Lance Star: Sky Ranger (a novella for vol. 4 and finishing up the full-length novel) for Airship 27 and a graphic novel script for New Legend Productions after that.

Whew.

Not The Cover

But all that can start in the morning. Or rather, later this morning as it's after 2 a.m. as I type this.

For now, I think sleep sounds like a good idea.

Stepping Into The Spider's Web!

I had a great day of writing today. It was gorgeous weather here in North Georgia with temps in the upper 60s. I love it so I took the laptop outside to do some writing. As a result I made a nice dent in my story for the upcoming The Spider anthology.

TIME TO CALL IT A DAY!

Busy day. Worked on updating both the BEN Books website and this one as well. It's taking longer than I'd hoped to get everything in place, but it needed to be done. Plus, I worked on a multitude of assorted behind the scenes activities that are all part of the job.

I also spent a few hours working on the cover of an upcoming release called Earthstrike Agenda, a sci fi novel I wrote a few years back that I'll finally be relelasing this year (more about that when it gets a little closer, but here's a peek at the title font I'm thinking about using).

Busy, busy, busy...

Another busy day. Started writing my story for Moonstone Books upcoming second volume of stories featuring the classic pulp character, The Spider. I also loosely plotted out my story for the upcoming Pulp Obscura entry for The New Adventures of The Eagle for Pro Se Productions. I'll start on that story after I finish The Spider's latest adventure.

I also spent some time working on the upgrade to the website. Nothing posted yet, but soon those little tabs up top will be filled with all sorts of good information you might find useful. I've already started populating some of the tabs, but still have a bit to go.

The Spider and The Eagle!

Finished my story for the Tales of The Rook anthology yesterday and sent it off to the editor. I also did some work on the website. You may have noticed some of the changes. Still a bit more work to do on that, but I have to work it in around the writing gigs.

Last night I did some reading of The Spider and The Eagle as I'm writing stories for both characters starting this weekend for Moonstone Books and Pulp Obscura, respectively. I came up with loose plots for each. Now I just need to flesh them out and get to writing.

There's more writing on the agenda today as I'm trying to keep the momentum going. Also supposed to meet the family for lunch and a few errands. Should be a good day.

Are You Ready To Open The Ruby Files?

New Pulp Publisher airship 27 announced their first four titles of 2012. One of those is The Ruby Files Vol. 1. This anthology features four tales of 1930's hard-boiled private eye, Rick Ruby. Rick Ruby is the brainchild of Sean Taylor and Bobby Nash, who created the characters and the series bible the other writers used as reference when writing their stories.

The Ruby Files Vol. 1 features stories by Sean Taylor, Andrew Salmon, William Maynard, and Bobby Nash with a cover painting by Mark Wheatley and interior illustrations by Rob Moran. Editing this volume is Ron Fortier. Design work by Rob Davis. As soon as Airship 27 releases the full image to the public I'll share it here.

Look for the debut of The Ruby Files from Airship 27 this March.

I had a pretty good writing day today, if I do say so myself. There is still a lot to get done in January and I'm a long way from the finish line, but I did put a dent in a project today. I just have to finish the last little bit and polish my Rook story and send it off to the editor tomorrow. After that its back to work on Lance Star: Sky Ranger Vol. 4 and a story featuring a certain pulp Master of Men.

It’s amazing how my brain works sometimes. As soon as my head hit the pillow early this morning (around 3:40 a.m.), story ideas started flowing. So I got up and wrote some more. I love it when the muse kicks in. I just wish it didn’t happen so often when I lay me down to sleep. :)

This particular plot is for the upcoming Tales of The Rook for Reese Unlimited and Pro Se Productions. My story features The Rook taking on an arsonist firebombing buildings in Atlanta, GA.

They all feature prominently in my story for the upcoming Airship 27 production, Lance star: Sky Ranger volume 4, coming in 2012. After writing several down to Earth Sky Ranger stories I thought it was high time to do some sci fi with the characters ala the old G-8 books.

That's right, I've begun work on a new Lance Star: Sky Ranger pulp anthology and will be joined by writers Sean Taylor, Andrew Salmon, and Tom Novak. It promises to be a fun time.

A Writer's Moment of Zen...

Just had a plot point fall into place that made this story a lot better. Reading back over it, the clues were all there, but I, like the protagonist, hadn't put them together until this moment in the story. I guess my subconscious was putting the story together before my conscious brain caught up with it. I love it when that happens.

Here was today's post. Short, sweet, and to the point.

Had an okay day of writing. Only 1,100 or so words. This darn sinus infection makes it rather hard to concentrate, but I muddled through. Time for a bit of TV then calling it a night.

I'm working toward the finish line on my story for the upcoming 2012 release of Nightbeat from Radio Archives. This anthology features new stories based ont he old time radio series, Nightbeat. You can see a small placeholder cover in the COMING SOON section along the side of the page (and I'll add it to this post as well). This has been a fun character to write. Now all I have to do is cross the finish line.

Sean Taylor posted an interesting query on his blog http://seanhtaylor.blogspot.com/. Sean asked 'How Pure Should Pulp Fiction Be?' Some of New Pulp's finest (including Bobby) responded.

When you think of pulp fiction, what springs to mind? The hard-boiled P.I.? The lost Earthman winning and wooing on Mars? The jungle lord? The aviator adventurer? The masked vigilante precursor to the comic book super hero? Weird horror tales with skeletons and damsels in distress? (For the sake of argument, let's all assume you didn't immediately go to the movie with John Travolta and Samuel Jackson, even as good as it is.)

Pulp has covered many genres, and was originally so named because of the cheap paper on which it was published. Pretty much everybody who loves the style knows that.

But, over time, some genres tended to become more synonymous with the definition of pulp than others.

And some would argue that pulp itself is a genre. (For the sake of this article, we're going to treat pulp as a style of telling a story and not a genre unto itself, since so many genres were represented within its ranks.)

Charlotte Comic Con Wrap Up!

I was a guest at the Charlotte Comic Con on Sunday, December 18th in Charlotte, North Carolina. A fun show. Con organizers Rick and Dave put on this one day show three times a year. They are always packed and it's great seeing more families at these events, especially all of the kids. They've even started doing a costume contest which adds some nice costumed folks to the mix.

Marketing 101

I was inspired by Sean Taylor's recent blog post over at http://seanhtaylor.blogspot.com/, which you should be reading, and if you're not, scoot on over there and take a look. I'll wait.

Okay. Welcome back. Sean recently posted on his blog some of his writing tips that he posts to Twitter. That made me remember that I had dome something similar with marketing tweets a couple of years ago. So, I dug up the file and thought I would post them here. These are in the form they were originally posted and not updated.

Since a few people asked, here are a few free & inexpensive marketing tricks I’ve learned (self taught). Most are pretty straightforward.

These work for comic books & novels and for writers & artists. There are a few so I apologize for the upcoming deluge of tweets.

Free promotions: Websites cost for domain name, but there are also plenty of free sites out there like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, ComicSpace, Blogger, etc.

Don’t assume that just because you’ve moved on to the newest social network that all of your fans have. You don’t want to lose them.

These are free tools that only take an hour or so a day to get the word out. Post sketches or tease with panels or pages from WIP.

Don’t just tweet, bulletin, whatever that your book is available. I follow a few who do that & I find myself skipping their posts unread.

Be personable and talk about other things. There are many pros on Twitter that do this well. It’s not just about selling your latest book.

If you do comics, apply to join the Comic Book Industry Alliance. www.cbia.com for comic pros & retailers. They will check your credentials.

Show retailers your book. Offer to send a pdf of the full issue to retailers so they know what it is about & can recommend it to customers.

Offer to do store signings. What’s the worst thing that can happen? The store can say no thanks.

Learn to write press releases & know where to send them. Make a list of press contacts. How you get the word out is also important.

Send press releases to book websites, podcasters, local newspapers (they love writing about locals), magazines out there, regardless of size

Post press releases on any book site with an open forum. All comic book news sites, for example, have a forum or message board.

When it comes to press releases & bulletins, copy & paste is your friend. I write mine in word & paste accordingly.

I sometimes make minor changes depending on where I post. This helps keep the information fresh.

Don’t just talk about your latest. If issue 2 or book 2 is out, remind people about issue or book 1. Don’t assume they already know about it

Promote upcoming issues, issues in catalog so readers & retailers know to order it. Do another press release once the book is in stores.

Inexpensive promotions: Postcards. www.overnightprints.com & www.clubflyers.com are always running free postcard deals. Just pay shipping.

Flyers. Photocopies are not expensive. You can make & distribute around town.

Drop off the flyers &/or postcards at comic shops, bookstores, music, games, movies, etc. (ask first). Most are happy to put them out.

If you’re at or near a convention, drop some postcards or flyers off on the freebie table, even if you're not a guest.

Team up with other creators. Drop off postcards & flyers for their book & they return the favor for their next con appearance with yours.

ALWAYS have cards, flyers, or promo items on hand. I keep a small box of various cards in my car at all times.

You never know when the topic of books might come up and someone expresses an interest. I've sold quite a few books this way.

Incentives. Offer to do a free sketch for comic shops that order 5 copies or more of the issue or run a monthly drawing on your website.

Encourage people to send in comments or post on forum & draw from those a winner of a signed book, a sketch, or signed bookplate.

If you do an incentive, promote that you do it just like you promote the book itself.

When you find stores that support your book, drop them a letter or give them a phone call to thank them. Maybe get a little feedback.

Just don't call stores on new book day!

Personal appearances. Get out there & meet the fans & retailers. Conventions & stores open to doing signings are out there.

Like a politician, you've gotta press the flesh. Be friendly. Be approachable. A bad personal connection can sour a reader to your work.

A good experience between reader and creator can result in making a new fan.
